What Employers Look For
The qualifications that appear most often in product design engineer jobs.
- Proficiency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, CATIA, or Creo
- Experience with design-for-manufacturability and design-for-assembly principles
- Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a related field
- Familiarity with GD&T and engineering drawing standards
- Experience taking products from concept through production release
- Knowledge of materials selection, tolerance analysis, and supplier communication
Tips for Your Product Design Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to DFM depth
Most product design engineer postings screen for design-for-manufacturability experience, not just CAD skills. Call out specific tolerances you've held, materials you've specified, and how your designs changed between prototype and production to make that experience concrete.
Showcase your portfolio with real constraints
Hiring managers want to see how you handled trade-offs, not just polished renders. Include cost targets you hit, mass or envelope constraints you worked within, and any DFT or DFA changes made after supplier feedback. Process beats aesthetics here.
Filter openings by industry vertical first
Product design engineer roles in medical devices require design controls and FDA familiarity, while consumer electronics roles prioritize BOM cost and cycle time. Applying across every vertical dilutes your pitch, so target one or two where your materials and compliance background is strongest.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists product design engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Prep for a take-home design exercise
Many product design engineer interviews include a timed design challenge covering assembly, tolerancing, or material selection. Practice narrating your decision logic out loud, because interviewers care as much about your trade-off reasoning as they do about the final sketch or model.
Negotiate relocation and prototype access
Beyond base compensation, ask about lab access, prototyping budgets, and travel to suppliers or contract manufacturers. These resources directly affect your ability to do the job and are often negotiable at the offer stage before headcount is locked.
Product Design Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most product design engineers?
The companies hiring the most product design engineers right now include Apple, Molex, and Cadence Design Systems, with the largest share of openings in California, Texas, and Pennsylvania, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Openings tend to cluster at hardware-focused companies in consumer electronics, automotive, and medical device sectors.
How many product design engineer jobs are remote?
About 17% of product design engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though fully remote positions are less common than in software roles because hands-on lab and prototyping work often requires on-site presence. Systems and documentation-heavy roles, such as sustaining engineering and release engineering, tend to offer the most schedule flexibility.
How do you become a product design engineer?
Most product design engineers start with a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, industrial design, or a closely related field, then build CAD proficiency in tools like SolidWorks or Creo through coursework or internships. Gaining hands-on experience with prototyping, GD&T, and design reviews, either in an internship or a junior role, is the fastest way to qualify for full-time positions. A portfolio showing real product development work, including design iterations and manufacturing feedback, strengthens every application.
Can you get a product design engineer job with little experience?
Yes, entry-level product design engineer roles exist, especially at companies that run structured new-grad programs in consumer electronics, automotive, and contract manufacturing. The strongest candidates without professional experience show a portfolio of personal or academic projects that reached physical prototypes, demonstrate CAD proficiency in an industry-standard tool, and can speak to material choices and manufacturing constraints they worked through during the project.
What does the product design engineer interview process look like?
Most product design engineer interviews start with a recruiter screen covering background and role fit, followed by a technical phone or video interview focused on CAD experience, DFM principles, and materials knowledge. Later rounds typically include a portfolio review where you walk through a past project in detail, and many companies add a take-home or on-site design exercise. Final rounds often involve conversations with cross-functional partners such as manufacturing, systems, or program management.
Where can I find and apply to product design engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to product design engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your background, specialization, and location preference, then apply directly to each one that fits.
