Project Manager Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project manager in Montana?
Montana does not require a state-issued license to work as a project manager, so the path runs through education and professional certification. Most employers expect a bachelor's degree in a field relevant to the industry, such as construction management, business, or engineering. The PMP credential from the Project Management Institute is the most recognized certification in Montana hiring and significantly strengthens a candidacy across construction, healthcare, and government sectors.
How much do project managers make in Montana?
Project managers in Montana earn a median of about $146,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $105,270 for the lowest 10% to over $204,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project managers in Montana?
Companies currently hiring project managers in Montana include HDR, Jobot, and Sanbell, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's mix of large construction firms, regional healthcare systems, and state agencies means project manager demand is distributed across several industries rather than concentrated in a single sector.
Which Montana cities have the most project manager jobs?
Billings, Bozeman, and Helena account for the most project manager openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest commercial hub, home to major healthcare systems and energy companies, while Missoula's university presence and growing tech sector drive demand, and Helena's role as the state capital generates consistent openings in government and infrastructure project management.
Are there remote project manager jobs in Montana?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 22% of project manager openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how much of the coordination, reporting, and stakeholder work in this role can be done off-site. IT project management and program management roles carry the highest share of fully remote arrangements, while construction and field-based project management typically require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a project manager in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving into a project coordinator or assistant project manager role, which Montana employers across construction, healthcare, and state government regularly post as stepping stones. Billings Clinic, the Montana Department of Transportation, and regional construction firms like those working on infrastructure contracts often bring in coordinators who learn the role on the job. Earning a CAPM credential from the Project Management Institute, or building a portfolio of organized volunteer or internship projects, gives early-career candidates a concrete edge over other applicants without a full project management history.
Where can I find and apply to project manager jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to project manager jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and target industry, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
