Project Site Manager Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project site manager in Iowa?
Most project site managers in Iowa enter the role through a construction management or civil engineering degree followed by several years of field experience as an assistant project manager or superintendent. Iowa does not require a state-issued general contractor license for project site managers employed by a licensed firm, but employers consistently expect candidates to hold OSHA 30 certification and a PMP or CCM credential. Iowa State University and the University of Iowa both offer relevant construction and engineering programs that many local employers recognize.
How much do project site managers make in Iowa?
Project site managers in Iowa earn a median of about $99,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,260 for the lowest 10% to over $167,250 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project site managers in Iowa?
Iowa project site manager roles are posted by HDR, Amazon, and MidAmerican Energy and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's steady pipeline of commercial, industrial, and infrastructure projects means established regional contractors and national firms with Iowa operations recruit continuously throughout the year.
Which Iowa cities have the most project site manager jobs?
Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and Iowa account for the largest share of project site manager openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the most volume as the state's primary hub for commercial real estate, data center construction, and institutional building, while Cedar Rapids and the Quad Cities support demand through manufacturing facility upgrades and ongoing industrial development along the I-380 and I-80 corridors.
Are there remote project site manager jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Project site management is an inherently on-site role, and most Iowa employers require physical presence to oversee crews, inspect work, and coordinate with subcontractors. About 12% of project site manager openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions typically involve pre-construction planning, estimating, or owner's representative work rather than active field supervision.
How can I get hired as a project site manager in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is landing an assistant project manager or field engineer role with a mid-size Iowa contractor such as Kiewit, Ryan Companies, or a regional firm like Rochon Corporation, then building site hours from there. Iowa State University's construction engineering program connects graduates directly with Iowa contractors through internship pipelines that often convert to full-time offers. Earning your OSHA 30 certification before applying gives early-career candidates a concrete credential that Iowa hiring managers look for when comparing otherwise similar applicants.
