Construction Project Manager Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction project manager in Iowa?
Most construction project managers in Iowa enter the field with a bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or architecture, then build field experience through estimating, superintendent, or project engineer roles before moving into project management. Iowa does not require a state-issued license specifically for construction project managers, but commercial contractors often expect candidates to hold or pursue a Project Management Professional or Certified Construction Manager credential. Iowa State University and the University of Iowa both offer construction-related programs that Iowa employers actively recruit from.
How much do construction project managers make in Iowa?
Construction project managers in Iowa earn a median of about $99,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,260 for the lowest 10% to over $167,250 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire construction project managers in Iowa?
Companies currently hiring construction project managers in Iowa include KALCON, Lloyd Companies, and Ryan Companies US, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Iowa's active commercial and infrastructure pipeline means large regional contractors, national firms with Iowa operations, and major institutional owners such as hospital systems and university facilities departments post openings throughout the year.
Which Iowa cities have the most construction project manager jobs?
Cedar Rapids, Des Moines, and West Des Moines account for the largest share of construction project manager openings in Iowa. Des Moines drives the most volume as the state capital and its largest metro, with sustained commercial development, data center construction, and healthcare facility expansion anchoring demand, while Cedar Rapids and Davenport generate openings through industrial, logistics, and infrastructure projects tied to their manufacturing and river-corridor economies.
Are there remote construction project manager jobs in Iowa?
Yes, but they're rare. Construction project management is fundamentally a site-based role requiring regular presence on jobsites, in owner meetings, and during inspections, so fully remote positions are uncommon. About 38% of construction project manager openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be preconstruction, estimating-heavy, or program-management roles where the work is largely document and coordination-driven.
How can I get hired as a construction project manager in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a project engineer or assistant project manager role, which large Iowa contractors such as Ryan Companies and Miron Construction use to develop early-career candidates. Graduates of Iowa State University's construction engineering program or the University of Northern Iowa's construction management program are actively recruited into these positions. Building a portfolio of internship work, obtaining an OSHA 30-hour certification, and pursuing a Construction Management Association of America student membership all strengthen an application when direct project management experience is limited.
Where can I find and apply to construction project manager jobs in Iowa?
You can find and apply to construction project manager jobs in Iowa on Migrate Mate, which lists current Iowa openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your experience and target sector, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
