Construction Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a construction project manager in California?
Most construction project managers in California enter the role through a bachelor's degree in construction management or civil engineering, then build field experience as a project engineer or assistant project manager. California does not require a personal contractor's license for employees managing projects on behalf of a licensed firm, but many employers expect familiarity with the California Contractors State License Board system and CSLB-regulated processes. A PMP or Certified Construction Manager credential strengthens candidacy for senior roles.
How much do construction project managers make in California?
Construction project managers in California earn a median of about $133,160 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $82,100 for the lowest 10% to over $211,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire construction project managers in California?
Employers hiring construction project managers in California right now include BKF Engineers, Turner & Townsend Pty Limited, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's scale of public infrastructure investment and persistent commercial development activity means hiring is spread across major general contractors, specialty subcontractors, and public agencies statewide.
Which California cities have the most construction project manager jobs?
Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Jose have the most construction project manager openings in California. Los Angeles dominates by volume due to its size, sustained commercial and mixed-use pipeline, and major public works programs, while San Francisco and San Diego reflect concentrated activity in technology-driven commercial development and defense-adjacent infrastructure projects respectively.
Are there remote construction project manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Construction project management is an inherently site-dependent role, and most California employers expect regular presence on job sites or in regional offices. About 15% of construction project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions typically involve preconstruction planning, estimating coordination, or program oversight rather than active site management.
How can I get hired as a construction project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a project engineer or assistant project manager role at a general contractor. Large California firms such as Swinerton and Hensel Phelps run structured associate and new-graduate programs that rotate candidates through preconstruction, field supervision, and project controls. A degree in construction management or civil engineering from a California State University program is widely recognized, and earning an OSHA 30 certification and Procore proficiency before applying gives candidates a concrete edge with California hiring managers.
Where can I find and apply to construction project manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to construction project manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings from employers actively hiring. Find roles that match your experience level and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
