QA Engineer Jobs in Iowa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a qa engineer in Iowa?
No state-issued license is required to work as a qa engineer in Iowa. Most Iowa employers look for a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field, combined with demonstrated testing experience. Earning an ISTQB certification strengthens applications considerably. Many candidates enter through software development or business analyst roles at Iowa technology and financial services firms before moving into dedicated QA positions.
How much do QA engineers make in Iowa?
QA engineers in Iowa earn a median of about $88,590 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $55,640 for the lowest 10% to over $126,290 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire qa engineers in Iowa?
Iowa qa engineer roles are posted by Elanco, JBS Foods, and Accura HealthCare and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Iowa's financial services and insurance sectors, anchored in Des Moines, consistently generate some of the steadiest QA demand in the state.
Which Iowa cities have the most qa engineer jobs?
Cedar Rapids, West Des Moines, and Des Moines have the most qa engineer openings in Iowa. Des Moines dominates because of its concentration of insurance, financial technology, and healthcare IT employers, while Cedar Rapids benefits from aerospace and manufacturing firms like Collins Aerospace, and the Quad Cities corridor along the Iowa-Illinois border supports QA roles tied to manufacturing and distribution operations.
Are there remote qa engineer jobs in Iowa?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 60% of qa engineer openings tied to Iowa are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally this work fits a distributed model. Test planning, automation scripting, and defect tracking are the parts of the role most commonly performed fully remotely, while hardware or embedded systems QA tends to require at least some on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a qa engineer in Iowa with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior QA analyst role at one of Iowa's financial services or insurance technology teams, where formal testing programs exist for candidates with a relevant degree and foundational knowledge. Principal Financial Group and other large Des Moines-based employers periodically hire entry-level QA associates. Building a portfolio of personal testing projects, contributing to open-source QA efforts, and earning the ISTQB Foundation certification all give candidates a credible edge over applicants with no formal background.
Where can I find and apply to qa engineer jobs in Iowa?
