Tips for Your QA Engineer Job Search
Tailor your resume to automation tools
List every testing framework you've used, Selenium, Cypress, Playwright, Appium, by name and context. Many qa engineer job listings are filtered by tool before a human reads them, so burying frameworks in a summary paragraph instead of a skills section costs you interviews.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists qa engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Quantify defects caught and cycles reduced
Generic claims like 'improved quality' don't land. QA resumes get traction when you write something concrete: how many regression cycles you automated, how much test coverage increased, or how a defect you caught before release prevented a production incident.
Filter openings by test type and domain
A qa engineer role in fintech often demands API and security testing experience, while a gaming company wants performance and load testing. Search by domain, not just title, so you're applying to openings where your specific testing background is the actual requirement.
Prepare a live code or scripting demo
Most qa engineer interviews now include a live automation exercise, usually writing a test script against a sample app or API. Practice writing Cypress or Pytest tests under time pressure so you can narrate your logic clearly while you work.
Negotiate scope before accepting an offer
Before you sign, confirm whether the role is purely manual, purely automation, or a mix, and whether QA owns the test strategy or just executes cases written by others. Misaligned expectations on scope are the most common reason qa engineers leave within a year.
QA Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most qa engineers?
Food Lion, Cox Automotive, and United States Steel are hiring the most qa engineers right now, with openings concentrated in California, Texas, and North Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Demand is especially high at companies scaling their engineering teams or moving from manual to automated testing pipelines.
How many qa engineer jobs are remote?
About 43% of qa engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of September 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible engineering roles. Automation-focused positions tend to be the most flexible, since writing and running scripts requires no physical hardware or on-site access.
How do you become a qa engineer?
Start with a foundation in software development basics, then focus on testing concepts like test case design, defect lifecycle, and regression strategies. Learn at least one automation framework such as Selenium or Cypress, and practice writing scripts against real applications. Build a small portfolio of automated test suites on a code repository, then apply to junior or associate qa engineer roles to gain production experience.
How do you get hired as a qa engineer with little experience?
Target companies that post explicitly for junior or associate qa engineers rather than applying to senior roles and hoping. Build a public portfolio of test scripts written against open-source or demo applications to show employers you can automate, not just describe testing theory. Roles in startups and mid-size SaaS companies tend to be more open to candidates who show initiative and learning velocity over years of direct experience.
What does the qa engineer interview process look like?
Most qa engineer interviews start with a recruiter screen focused on your testing background and tool familiarity, followed by a technical round where you write or review test cases for a given feature. Automation-heavy roles add a live coding exercise where you script tests against a sample app or API. Final rounds typically involve a system design or test strategy discussion with the engineering or product team.
Where can I find and apply to qa engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to qa engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from companies across the United States. Search for roles that match your testing background and experience level, then apply directly to each listing that fits.
