Why does the job exist?
This position will be responsible for review and reporting ambient air monitoring data from the statewide network in accordance with regulatory requirements of the Clean Air Act to inform decision making to prevent the deterioration of air quality, protect the public health of New Mexicans, and the natural beauty of the state. This role is critical to ensure the accuracy, completeness, and timely submission of air quality data collected from the New Mexico Environment Department's (NMED) ambient air monitoring network to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This position additionally plays a key role in maintaining data integrity and ensures all data meets federal quality assurance/quality control requirements to enable regulatory agencies and the public to access reliable information on air pollutant concentrations and trends. This position is also critical to ensure the NMED Air Quality Bureau fulfills the requirements of the Clean Air Act 105 Grant.
How does it get done?
- Utilize the New Mexico Environment Department's (NMED) ambient air monitoring data acquisition system and the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) data management system to monitor, analyze, validate, and report ambient air criteria pollutant and quality assurance/quality control data
- Maintain NMED's ambient air database by ensuring all data is complete, valid, and accurately flagged with appropriate informational or null codes and assist with preparing annual data certifications
- Report ambient air and quality control data to EPA's ambient air data management system within regulatory timelines
- Communicate with site operators to document monitor malfunctions and data anomalies
- Utilize Excel and data acquisition system analytical tools to conduct data analyses to ensure conformance with acceptance criteria and regulatory requirements and document results for final level data validation
- Generate data reports upon request from public or internal customers
- Update quality assurance Standard Operating Procedures as procedures are refined and as required following regulatory changes

Bachelor's Degree in Physical, Natural, or Environmental Science, Soil Science, Engineering, or Chemistry and four (4) years of experience in public/environmental health, environmental science, animal science, natural science, biological science, physical science, air quality management, engineering, chemistry, geology, hazardous waste management, wildlife management, and/or water resources. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling eight (8) years may substitute for the required education and experience
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Some sitting, standing, bending and reaching may be required.
