Radiation Therapist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a radiation therapist in California?
You must hold an active California Radiation Therapist license issued by the California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch. To qualify, you need to complete an accredited radiation therapy program at the associate or bachelor's level and pass the ARRT certification examination in Radiation Therapy. California does not accept reciprocity from other states, so out-of-state therapists must apply directly to the Radiologic Health Branch for a California license before practicing.
How much do radiation therapists make in California?
Radiation therapists in California earn a median of about $166,450 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $130,150 for the lowest 10% to over $208,100 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire radiation therapists in California?
Employers hiring radiation therapists in California right now include City of Hope, CommonSpirit Health, and Sutter Health, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's large integrated health systems and NCI-designated cancer centers tend to post the most consistent openings, particularly for therapists trained on advanced delivery platforms.
Which California cities have the most radiation therapist jobs?
Merced, Stockton, and Modesto have the most radiation therapist openings in California. Los Angeles dominates due to the density of major health systems and freestanding cancer centers, while San Francisco and San Diego benefit from large academic medical centers and proximity to research-driven oncology programs that maintain year-round staffing needs.
Are there remote radiation therapist jobs in California?
Yes, but they're rare. Radiation therapy is an inherently hands-on clinical role requiring direct patient contact and operation of treatment equipment, so remote work is not a realistic option for most positions. About 0% of radiation therapist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those roles typically involve dosimetry consultation, quality assurance review, or administrative oversight rather than direct patient treatment.
How can I get hired as a radiation therapist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for new-graduate positions at large California health systems that run structured orientation programs, including UC Health campuses and Kaiser Permanente facilities across Northern and Southern California. These employers regularly hire ARRT-eligible new graduates and provide supervised clinical onboarding. Candidates coming from radiologic technology or dosimetry roles have a natural lateral path in. Having your California Radiologic Health Branch application submitted before your first interview significantly strengthens your candidacy.
Where can I find and apply to radiation therapist jobs in California?
