Tips for Your Research And Development Job Search
Quantify your experimental outcomes on paper
R&D hiring managers want to see results, not just responsibilities. Replace vague descriptions like 'conducted experiments' with specific outcomes: compounds synthesized, prototypes advanced to testing, or failure rates reduced. Your resume should read like a lab report, not a job description.
Tailor applications to the development phase
Early-stage discovery roles require different skills than late-stage development or scale-up positions. Read each posting carefully for keywords like 'proof of concept,' 'IND filing,' or 'manufacturing transfer' and mirror that language in your application materials to signal you understand where the work sits.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists research and development openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Highlight cross-functional collaboration experience
R&D roles rarely operate in isolation. Interviewers probe how you've worked with regulatory, manufacturing, or clinical teams. Prepare two or three concrete examples of projects where you translated technical findings for non-scientists or aligned timelines across departments.
Align your portfolio with the company pipeline
Before interviewing, map your hands-on experience to the company's publicly disclosed pipeline or product roadmap. Knowing which therapeutic area, technology platform, or product generation they're investing in lets you frame your background as directly relevant rather than broadly applicable.
Negotiate start date alongside offer terms
R&D offers often include publication rights, IP assignment clauses, and non-compete language that need review before you accept. Ask for written confirmation of the full offer package and, if you need time to review these terms, request a short extension rather than accepting on the spot.
Research And Development Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most research and developments?
The companies hiring the most research and developments right now include KPMG, Research And Diagnostic Systems, and AlphaSense, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Massachusetts, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and advanced manufacturing companies consistently account for the largest volume of active postings.
How many research and development jobs are remote?
About 13% of research and development openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, though most lab-based roles require on-site presence. Sub-areas most likely to offer remote flexibility include regulatory affairs, technical writing, computational modeling, and data science roles embedded within R&D teams.
How do you become a research and development?
Most research and development roles require a degree in a relevant science or engineering field, with advanced positions typically requiring a master's or PhD. Build hands-on experience through internships, co-ops, or academic research projects. Develop proficiency in the tools and methodologies standard to your target industry, document your experimental work thoroughly, and pursue certifications in quality or regulatory systems where applicable.
Can you get hired in research and development with little experience?
Entry-level research and development positions do exist, particularly at companies that recruit directly from graduate programs or offer structured rotational programs. Highlight academic research projects, thesis work, or internships that involved hands-on lab technique, data collection, or experimental design. Roles titled research associate or junior scientist are the most accessible starting points for candidates building initial experience.
What does the research and development interview process look like?
The research and development interview process typically involves an initial screening call, followed by a technical interview that tests domain knowledge and problem-solving in your area of specialization. Later rounds often include a presentation of past research, a panel interview with cross-functional team members, and discussions about regulatory or quality frameworks relevant to the role. The full process commonly runs three to five stages.
Where can I find and apply to research and development jobs?
