Roofing Jobs in Michigan: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a roofing contractor in Michigan?
To work as a roofing contractor in Michigan, you must obtain a Residential Builders License or a Maintenance and Alteration Contractor License through the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs. Applicants need relevant field experience and must pass a state licensing exam. Roofers employed directly by a licensed contractor are not required to hold their own license, making employment under an established Michigan roofing company a common starting point.
Which companies hire roofings in Michigan?
Employers hiring roofings in Michigan right now include Vault Roofing, Schoenherr Roofing, and Four Seasons Kanga Roof, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Michigan's mix of aging residential housing stock and active commercial development keeps established local and regional contractors posting openings throughout the year.
Which Michigan cities have the most roofing jobs?
The Michigan cities with the most roofing openings are Troy, Roseville, and Grand Rapids. Detroit's large residential base and ongoing commercial redevelopment drive the heaviest demand, while Grand Rapids and Lansing draw consistent hiring from regional contractors serving both suburban growth corridors and institutional construction projects tied to healthcare and education campuses.
Are there remote roofing jobs in Michigan?
Yes, but they're rare. Roofing is a hands-on trade that requires on-site presence for installation, inspection, and repair work. About 6% of roofing openings tied to Michigan are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, and those roles tend to be estimating, project coordination, or sales positions rather than field installation work.
How can I get hired as a roofing worker in Michigan with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a registered apprenticeship program through the United Union of Roofers, Waterproofers and Allied Workers, which has active Michigan chapters in Detroit and Grand Rapids. Many Michigan roofing contractors also hire entry-level laborers with no prior experience, expecting to train on the job. Candidates who have worked in general construction, framing, or exterior siding have an easier transition, and earning an OSHA 10 card before applying gives a competitive edge for most entry-level listings.
Where can I find and apply to roofing jobs in Michigan?
You can find and apply to roofing jobs in Michigan on Migrate Mate, which lists current Michigan openings from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience level and location, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
