Security Project Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security project manager in California?
The most direct path is a bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, or a related technical field combined with project management experience. California does not issue a state license specific to security project managers, but employers consistently require professional credentials such as the ASIS Certified Protection Professional or a PMP certification. Starting in roles like security coordinator, site security supervisor, or physical security analyst at large California defense or tech firms builds the hands-on foundation hiring managers expect.
How much do security project managers make in California?
Security project managers in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security project managers in California?
Employers hiring security project managers in California right now include Rubrik Security Cloud, Databricks, and Decagon, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of defense contractors, technology headquarters, and large healthcare systems means openings appear across a wider range of industries here than in most other states.
Which California cities have the most security project manager jobs?
San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Mountain View lead California for security project manager openings. Los Angeles and San Diego benefit from dense concentrations of defense contractors and federal facilities, while the Bay Area drives demand through major technology companies and financial institutions headquartered there.
Are there remote security project manager jobs in California?
Yes, but they are less common than in purely desk-based fields because security project management often requires on-site assessments, vendor coordination, and physical inspections. About 33% of security project manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, with remote options most common in roles focused on cybersecurity program management, compliance documentation, and government contract oversight rather than physical security infrastructure.
How can I get hired as a security project manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a security coordinator or junior project coordinator role at a large California defense contractor or corporate security department, where structured mentorship and internal promotion paths exist. Pursuing an ASIS associate membership and studying for the Physical Security Professional credential signals commitment to hiring managers. Large California employers such as county government agencies and UC system facilities regularly post entry-level security operations roles that develop the site management and vendor coordination skills needed to move into project management.
Where can I find and apply to security project manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to security project manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings for roles that match your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
