Security Project Manager Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security project manager in Virginia?
The most direct path is earning a Project Management Professional certification through PMI alongside a security-focused credential such as a Certified Information Systems Security Professional or Physical Security Professional designation. Virginia employers, particularly federal contractors in Northern Virginia, expect candidates to hold or be eligible for a government security clearance. A bachelor's degree in cybersecurity, IT, or business administration is the standard educational foundation for entering this field in Virginia.
How much do security project managers make in Virginia?
Security project managers in Virginia earn a median of about $120,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $68,020 for the lowest 10% to over $179,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security project managers in Virginia?
Employers hiring security project managers in Virginia right now include Convergint, HII, and ICF, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's dense concentration of federal agencies and defense prime contractors means many of these openings require candidates with an active clearance and experience working within government program environments.
Which Virginia cities have the most security project manager jobs?
The cities with the most security project manager openings in Virginia are Norfolk, Arlington, and Henrico. Northern Virginia dominates because of its proximity to the Pentagon, federal intelligence agencies, and the massive cluster of defense contractors and cybersecurity firms operating throughout Arlington, Reston, and Tysons, while Richmond and Hampton Roads contribute openings tied to state government IT security and Navy installation contracts respectively.
Are there remote security project manager jobs in Virginia?
Yes, though the availability is mixed. About 71% of security project manager openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting a role where cleared work often requires on-site presence at a secure facility. The parts of the role most amenable to remote work are administrative oversight, reporting, vendor coordination, and planning phases that do not require classified system access.
How can I get hired as a security project manager in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is moving laterally from a security analyst, IT coordinator, or program analyst role into a junior project manager position within a Virginia federal contractor. Large contractors like Leidos and Booz Allen Hamilton regularly bring on associate project managers through early career programs that pair candidates with senior PMs on cleared programs. Earning a CAPM certification and obtaining at least a Secret clearance eligibility significantly strengthens an application from someone without direct PM experience.
Where can I find and apply to security project manager jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to security project manager jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your clearance level, certifications, and experience, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
