Project Director Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project director in Virginia?
Most project directors in Virginia reach the role by combining a bachelor's degree in a relevant field with significant program management experience, then earning the Project Management Professional certification from the Project Management Institute, which Virginia employers widely recognize as the benchmark credential. In construction-heavy sectors, Virginia also values the Certified Construction Manager credential. Senior project director roles in defense and federal IT typically require a track of progressively larger contract or program oversight before promotion into the director level.
How much do project directors make in Virginia?
Project directors in Virginia earn a median of about $120,840 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $68,020 for the lowest 10% to over $179,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project directors in Virginia?
Employers hiring project directors in Virginia right now include Capital One, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, and Turner & Townsend Pty Limited, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's heavy concentration of defense contractors, federal agencies, and large healthcare systems means consistent demand for experienced project directors across multiple industries year-round.
Which Virginia cities have the most project director jobs?
Richmond, McLean, and Arlington have the most project director openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia dominates because of its dense cluster of federal agencies and defense contractors, while Richmond draws demand from state government, healthcare systems, and commercial construction, and Hampton Roads generates openings through its large military installation footprint and associated contractor base.
Are there remote project director jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles, since project directors in Virginia frequently need to be on-site to manage contractors, attend client meetings, or oversee active construction and program offices. About 100% of project director openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, with the remote options concentrated in IT program management and consulting rather than construction or facilities roles.
How can I get hired as a project director in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to start as a project coordinator or project manager at one of Virginia's large defense contractors or healthcare systems and build toward the director level from there. Employers like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos regularly bring in associate program managers and grow them internally. Earning your Certified Associate in Project Management credential early signals commitment and gives you a competitive edge against other candidates without a director-level portfolio.
Where can I find and apply to project director jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to project director jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings across defense, construction, healthcare, and IT sectors. Find roles that fit your experience and apply directly to the employers posting them.
