Security Specialist Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a security specialist in Texas?
To work as a security specialist in Texas, most roles require a license from the Texas Department of Public Safety through its Private Security Program, which oversees security officers, managers, and investigators. Applicants must complete a state-approved training course, pass a background check, and submit a license application. Senior and cybersecurity-focused roles typically also require a bachelor's degree in criminal justice, information security, or a related field, along with industry certifications.
How much do security specialists make in Texas?
Security specialists in Texas earn a median of about $80,820 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,310 for the lowest 10% to over $135,450 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire security specialists in Texas?
Employers hiring security specialists in Texas right now include Target, Amazon, and M.C. Dean, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's concentration of energy companies, financial institutions, and large military installations creates consistent year-round demand across both corporate and government-adjacent security roles.
Which Texas cities have the most security specialist jobs?
Austin, Dallas, and Plano have the most security specialist openings in Texas. Houston's energy sector and port operations drive high demand for physical and infrastructure security, Dallas attracts corporate headquarters security teams, and San Antonio's large military and federal presence, including Joint Base San Antonio, generates steady openings in government and contractor security roles.
Are there remote security specialist jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're limited. Most security specialist roles require on-site presence for physical security, access control, or facility operations. About 13% of security specialist openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those positions tend to be concentrated in cybersecurity analysis, security consulting, and threat intelligence functions that don't require a physical post.
How can I get hired as a security specialist in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is starting as a licensed security officer under Texas's Private Security Program, then building toward a specialist role. Large Texas employers such as hospital systems, universities, and energy companies regularly hire entry-level security officers and promote from within. Candidates moving from adjacent roles like military service, law enforcement, or IT support have a strong advantage. Earning a Texas security officer license early and adding a CompTIA Security+ or similar certification accelerates hiring consideration considerably.
Where can I find and apply to security specialist jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to security specialist jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current Texas openings across industries and experience levels. Search through the available roles, find the ones that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
