Tips for Your Senior Litigation Counsel Job Search
Tailor your resume to litigation volume
Hiring teams for senior litigation counsel roles want to see the scale and complexity of your caseload, not just your practice areas. Quantify the number of matters you've managed simultaneously and highlight any cases that went to verdict or arbitration.
Highlight your outside counsel management experience
In-house litigation roles almost always require managing outside counsel relationships and budgets. Call out specific examples where you directed external firms, controlled litigation spend, or pushed back on billing to demonstrate you can run a matter efficiently.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists senior litigation counsel openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter by industry before you apply
Senior litigation counsel roles in insurance defense, financial services, and tech carry very different expectation sets. Review each posting for the subject matter of the litigation before applying so your cover letter speaks to the specific disputes the team actually handles.
Prepare a case narrative for your interview
Interviewers will ask you to walk through a complex matter from inception to resolution. Select a case that shows strategic judgment, not just procedural competence, ideally one where you influenced settlement strategy or managed a novel legal issue.
Negotiate total comp, not just base salary
In-house litigation roles often include bonus structures, equity, and litigation budget authority that vary significantly by employer. Before accepting an offer, clarify how performance bonuses are calculated and whether outside counsel spend falls under your direct control.
Senior Litigation Counsel Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most senior litigation counsels?
The companies hiring the most senior litigation counsels right now include Epic, Marks, O'Neill, O'Brien, Doherty & Kelly P.C., and Greenberg Traurig, with the largest share of openings in New York, California, and North Carolina, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Insurance carriers, large financial institutions, and diversified industrial companies tend to maintain the most consistent hiring volume for this role.
How many senior litigation counsel jobs are remote?
About 12% of senior litigation counsel openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, which is lower than many other in-house legal roles given the court appearance and deposition demands of active litigation. Sub-specialties focused on regulatory response, employment counseling, and pre-litigation dispute resolution tend to offer the most remote flexibility.
How do you become a senior litigation counsel?
You typically start by building a litigation foundation at a law firm where you handle motions, depositions, and client-facing strategy across multiple matters. After earning your bar admission and developing a defined practice area, you transition in-house as a litigation counsel, then advance to senior counsel by demonstrating you can independently manage complex matters, outside counsel relationships, and cross-functional legal risk without close supervision.
Can I get a senior litigation counsel role with limited in-house experience?
Yes, many employers hire senior litigation counsel directly from law firms, provided your firm experience reflects the complexity and volume the in-house team handles. The strongest candidates from firm backgrounds show they can operate independently, have managed client relationships directly, and understand how to think about litigation risk from a business perspective rather than a purely legal one.
What does the senior litigation counsel interview process look like?
The process typically begins with a recruiter or HR screen focused on your practice background and career trajectory, followed by substantive interviews with the general counsel, deputy general counsel, or senior members of the legal team. Expect at least one deep dive into a complex matter you've handled, questions about how you manage outside counsel, and a discussion of how you'd approach a hypothetical dispute relevant to the company's business.
Where can I find and apply to senior litigation counsel jobs?
You can find and apply to senior litigation counsel jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States in one place. Find the roles that match your practice background and apply directly to each listing from the page.
