A bit about us: Our client is a global leader in industrial automation and process technologies, supporting some of the largest pulp and paper manufacturers in North America. Their Regional Engineered Services (RES) division is experiencing significant growth and is building a dedicated engineering team focused on helping customers modernize, optimize, and support critical automation systems. The hiring manager is based in the Hampton Roads area, where the company plans to establish a flagship office for this growing team. While candidates in the Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads market are preferred, strong candidates located anywhere in Virginia, North Carolina, or South Carolina will be considered.

Travel: Approximately 15-20% throughout the Mid-Atlantic region
Compensation: $110,000 - $140,000 base salary (may extend depending on experience) + annual bonus opportunity up to 10%
This role is ideal for a DCS Engineer/Programmer, Controls Engineer, or Automation Engineer who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, working directly with customers, and wants a better work-life balance than many traditional mill-based positions. Unlike plant roles that often require responding to emergencies at all hours, this position allows engineers to support multiple customers while maintaining a more predictable schedule/work life balance and broader career growth opportunities.
JOB DETAILS
As a DCS Service Engineer, you will serve as a trusted technical advisor and hands-on engineering resource for pulp and paper customers throughout the Mid-Atlantic region. You will support modernization projects, legacy system upgrades, DCS integration efforts, troubleshooting, commissioning, and ongoing customer support. This position combines technical engineering expertise with customer-facing consulting responsibilities. The ideal candidate is an experienced programmer and engineer who can work independently, communicate effectively with customers, and contribute immediately without extensive training or handholding.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and support DCS modernization and migration projects
- Upgrade legacy control systems to modern platforms
- Support migrations such as Honeywell TDC 3000 to Honeywell Experion
- Integrate proprietary technologies with existing customer DCS environments
- Modify and develop control system software to support new equipment and process requirements
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation and control system issues
- Provide technical support during commissioning, startup, and service activities
- Travel to customer sites throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as needed
- Work directly with plant personnel, operators, maintenance teams, and engineering leadership
- Serve as a technical consultant and trusted advisor to customers
- Support continuous improvement and operational reliability initiatives

- Honeywell TDC 3000
- ABB
- Foxboro
- Emerson DeltaV
- Additional legacy and modern DCS platforms across the pulp and paper industry
Experience with Honeywell Experion is highly desirable.
WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or related discipline
- 5+ years of DCS, controls, automation, or process control experience
- Strong programming and configuration experience within industrial control systems
- Hands-on experience with one or more major DCS platforms:
- Honeywell
- DeltaV
- Foxboro
- ABB
- Experience performing system upgrades, migrations, or integration projects
- Ability to troubleshoot complex process control and automation issues
- Strong customer-facing communication skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Willingness to travel approximately 5-20%
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE

- Honeywell migration project experience
- Pulp and paper industry experience
- Mill operations experience
- Process control engineering background
- Customer support or field service engineering experience
