Software Developer Jobs in Oregon: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Oregon?
Software development in Oregon requires no state-issued license or registration, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skill. Most Oregon employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field, though strong candidates from accredited coding bootcamps and community college programs at institutions like Portland Community College also get hired. Building a portfolio of real projects and contributing to open-source work measurably strengthens an application.
How much do software developers make in Oregon?
Software developers in Oregon earn a median of about $142,720 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $83,070 for the lowest 10% to over $213,540 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Oregon?
Employers hiring software developers in Oregon right now include Trimble, Onto Innovation, and HP, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Oregon's concentration of semiconductor, athletic apparel, and enterprise software companies means hiring is spread across both large headquarters operations and the regional engineering offices of nationally known technology firms.
Which Oregon cities have the most software developer jobs?
Hillsboro, Portland, and Lake Oswego account for the largest share of software developer openings in Oregon. The Portland metro drives the majority of listings through its dense cluster of technology, financial services, and creative agency employers, while Hillsboro and Beaverton contribute heavily because Intel's Oregon campuses and Nike's world headquarters both maintain large software and engineering teams there.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Oregon?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 80% of software developer openings tied to Oregon are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how naturally the work translates to distributed environments. Roles in backend development, cloud engineering, and data platform work tend to be the most fully remote, while positions requiring close collaboration with hardware teams or on-site lab infrastructure are more likely to require in-person attendance.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Oregon with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or new-graduate rotational program with one of Oregon's anchor technology employers. Intel runs structured internship and new-grad engineering programs at its Hillsboro campus that regularly absorb candidates with strong coursework but limited professional experience. Portland-area agencies and startups also hire junior developers who can show a portfolio of deployed projects. Candidates coming from adjacent roles like QA analyst, technical support, or IT administrator have a credible lateral path by pairing that experience with a focused portfolio in web or scripting work.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Oregon?
You can find and apply to software developer jobs in Oregon on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the state. Search the listings, find roles that fit your background and target location, and apply directly to the ones that match.
