Position Summary
Red Cat Holding is looking for a motivated Software Engineer Intern to support our engineering team working on the ground control station experience for our drone platforms. This is a hands-on opportunity to learn real-world software engineering — including C++, Android development, and real-time systems — while contributing to features used in actual drone missions.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers on problems like: how do you keep a live data connection stable between a drone and a tablet? How do you debug an app that's running slow or crashing? How do you build something that has to work reliably in the field, not just in a lab?
No prior drone or aerospace experience needed — we're looking for strong fundamentals and curiosity, with mentorship built in.
What You'll Do
Assist in building and testing features for our Android-based ground control application, under the guidance of senior engineers
Help debug issues in native C++ code, Android apps, or communication between the two
Learn how drones and ground control software communicate in real time (MAVLink protocol, networking basics)
Support testing and validation of new features, including field-testing support when available
Contribute to build tooling, documentation, or automation tasks as needed
Participate in code reviews and team discussions to build good engineering habits early
What We're Looking For
Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field
Coursework or personal projects involving C++ (Java/Kotlin, Python, or other languages also valued)
Strong problem-solving and debugging instincts — comfortable digging into why something isn't working
Genuine interest in robotics, drones, or real-time/embedded systems
Comfortable working in a Linux-based development environment (or willing to learn quickly)
Nice to Have (not required)
Exposure to Android development or mobile app projects
Familiarity with Qt/QML or other UI frameworks
Interest in networking, hardware interfaces, or systems programming
Any personal or academic project involving drones, robotics, or embedded systems
Working Conditions
Primarily computer-based work in an office/lab environment
Occasional participation in field testing or facility walk-throughs may be available for hands-on exposure
Background Check
This position will require successfully completing a post-offer background check. Qualified candidates with a criminal history will be considered and are not automatically disqualified, consistent with federal and state law.

Software Developer Jobs in Utah: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a software developer in Utah?
Software development in Utah requires no state-issued license or registration, so the path runs through education and demonstrated skill. Most Utah employers expect at minimum a bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related field. Graduates from the University of Utah, Utah State University, or Brigham Young University are well represented in local hiring pipelines. A strong portfolio of completed projects, open-source contributions, or internship experience at Utah tech firms on the Wasatch Front meaningfully strengthens any application.
How much do software developers make in Utah?
Software developers in Utah earn a median of about $128,810 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $77,810 for the lowest 10% to over $177,970 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire software developers in Utah?
Employers hiring software developers in Utah right now include The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, L3Harris, and University of Utah, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Utah's Silicon Slopes corridor, stretching from Salt Lake City through Lehi and Provo, concentrates a high density of established tech firms and growing software companies that maintain full engineering teams in state.
Which Utah cities have the most software developer jobs?
Salt Lake City, Lehi, and Ogden have the most software developer openings in Utah. Salt Lake City anchors the market through its concentration of enterprise tech, financial services, and defense contractors, while Lehi and Provo benefit from the Silicon Slopes ecosystem of software product companies, SaaS startups, and the large engineering campuses that Adobe, Qualtrics, and similar firms operate along the I-15 corridor.
Are there remote software developer jobs in Utah?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 72% of software developer openings tied to Utah are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting the desk-based, computer-native nature of the work. Roles in full-stack web development, cloud engineering, and backend services are the most consistently offered as fully remote or flexible, while positions involving classified government contracts or on-site hardware integration tend to require regular in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a software developer in Utah with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an internship or new-graduate program at one of the large Wasatch Front employers, where structured cohorts regularly onboard candidates with limited professional experience. Adobe, Domo, and several defense contractors in the Salt Lake and Ogden areas run seasonal internship pipelines that convert to full-time offers. Entry-level roles like QA engineer, junior DevOps associate, or technical support specialist at Utah SaaS companies also serve as common stepping stones. A portfolio demonstrating at least one complete personal or capstone project gives candidates without experience a concrete edge in initial screening.
Where can I find and apply to software developer jobs in Utah?
You can find and apply to software developer jobs in Utah on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the available roles, find the ones that fit your experience and preferences, and apply directly.
