Sr Software Development Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a sr software development manager in California?
The path to a sr software development manager role in California typically starts with a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related engineering discipline, followed by several years as a software engineer before moving into a team lead or engineering manager role. California has no state-issued license for this position, but employers here consistently expect demonstrated experience managing engineers, shipping products, and owning technical strategy at an organizational level.
Which companies hire sr software development managers in California?
Employers hiring sr software development managers in California right now include Amazon, Adobe, and NVIDIA, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of major technology headquarters and large enterprise engineering organizations means demand for senior engineering management is distributed across both well-known consumer platforms and large-scale infrastructure companies.
Which California cities have the most sr software development manager jobs?
San Jose, Santa Clara, and Los Angeles have the most sr software development manager openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area dominates because of its dense cluster of technology company headquarters, while Los Angeles has grown steadily as a hub for entertainment technology, fintech, and enterprise software firms that have expanded their engineering leadership teams in recent years.

About 14% of sr software development manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of this role centers on communication, planning, and code review rather than physical presence.
