INTRODUCTION
Ready to do the most impactful work of your career? At Coinbase, we are uncompromising on our mission to increase economic freedom. The bar is high, the environment is intense, and we like it that way. This isn't a place for complacency, it’s a place to be pushed past your perceived limits. If you're ready to build the future of finance alongside people who refuse to settle for "good enough," you belong here. Coinbase is a remote-first, but not remote-only company. Expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called “surges.”
Blockchain Platform operates foundational infrastructure that connects Coinbase's products to the broader crypto economy. We build systems that power millions of transactions that match the speed and cost of underlying blockchains while maintaining industry-leading security of our users’ assets. We operate the nodes, indexers, wallets, and orchestration systems that power every core crypto action across Coinbase: send, receive, stake, bridge, wrap, and more. Over the past several years, we've grown to support 60+ blockchain networks and 300+ tokens across Coinbase's Retail, Institutional, and onchain products. Our teams span Asset Lifecycle, Nodes, Wallets, Blockchain Data, Blockchain Insights, Staking, and Developer Experience & AI - and we're in the middle of our next major chapter. We're investing deeply in rearchitecting our wallet stack, indexing infrastructure, and internal asset identifier systems for the next order of magnitude in scale, extensibility, and performance, while advancing new bets in Yield and Stablecoins. We're looking for a highly technical, crypto-passionate leader to define our engineering vision and help us build the next generation of industry-leading crypto infrastructure.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What you’ll be doing (ie. job duties):
- Define and drive the multi-quarter technical strategy for Blockchain Platform, spanning nodes, wallets, indexing, and asset lifecycle, to support new chains, new products, and significant growth in onchain transaction volume.
- Architect and evolve the core Blockchain Platform infrastructure - nodes, indexers, wallet systems, and liquidity primitives - for high availability, low latency, cost efficiency, and security at global scale.
- Lead end-to-end design and rollout of large, cross-team architectural initiatives (e.g., wallet stack rearchitecture, indexing stack redesign, asset identifier system), breaking high ambiguity into clear milestones and measurable outcomes.
- Set and enforce technical standards for correctness, security, and reliability across all crypto asset operations, including transaction finality, key management, reconciliation, and failure-mode handling for all onchain flows.
- Drive engineering efficiency across the org - defining standards for testing, quality, automation, and observability, and championing AI-native approaches that reduce operational burden and enable agents to serve as front-line operators.
- Use data and observability signals (e.g., transaction success rates, node reliability, indexing latency, on-call burden) to identify structural platform gaps and lead systematic reliability and efficiency improvements.
- Represent Blockchain Platform in executive and cross-org forums, clearly communicating tradeoffs, aligning stakeholders on strategy, and securing buy-in for high-impact technical bets including emerging areas like Yield and Stablecoins.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
What we look for in you (ie. job requirements):
- Experience with high-throughput transaction systems requiring strong auditability, idempotency, and financial precision.
- Familiarity with staking infrastructure, bridging protocols, or tokenization systems.
- Experience applying AI or agent-based automation to reduce operational toil in platform or infrastructure contexts.
- Background at a high-scale technology company with a track record of platform-level impact across multiple teams.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Nice to haves:
- Hands-on experience with one or more blockchain protocols at the node or protocol level (e.g., EVM chains, Solana, Bitcoin, L2s).
COMPENSATION
Pay Transparency Notice: Base salary varies by location (see range below). Total compensation may also include equity and bonus eligibility, and benefits (medical, dental, vision, 401(k)). Annual base salary range (excluding equity and bonus): $253,895 USD - $298,700 USD
APPLICATION LIMIT

Tips for Your Staff Software Engineer Job Search
Quantify your system scale and impact
Staff-level resumes get screened for scope, not just skills. Replace vague phrases like 'improved performance' with specifics: the number of services you owned, the traffic volume you handled, and the measurable outcome your work delivered across engineering or product.
Highlight cross-team technical leadership
Hiring managers at the staff level want evidence you've driven alignment across multiple teams, not just led a single project. Call out moments where you defined a technical direction, wrote an RFC, or resolved architectural disagreements that affected engineers outside your immediate squad.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists staff software engineer openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Filter openings by your technical domain
Staff engineer roles vary enormously by stack and system type. Search for your core domain explicitly, whether that's distributed systems, data infrastructure, or mobile platform, so you're not competing for roles where your depth doesn't map to what the team actually needs.
Prepare a systems design narrative, not just answers
Staff-level interviews expect you to drive the design conversation, not respond to prompts. Practice leading a system design session from ambiguous requirements to tradeoff decisions, because interviewers are evaluating your judgment and communication, not whether you reach a 'correct' answer.
Negotiate scope and technical influence, not just pay
At the staff level, the offer conversation should include what technical scope you'll own on day one, reporting structure, and whether the role is a new headcount or a backfill. These details shape your actual leverage and growth more than compensation alone.
Staff Software Engineer Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most staff software engineers?
The companies hiring the most staff software engineers right now include GEICO, Google, and CVS Health, with the largest share of openings in California, New York, and Texas, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is concentrated in companies scaling their platform or infrastructure organizations.
How many staff software engineer jobs are remote?
About 29% of staff software engineer openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more remote-accessible senior technical roles in engineering. Platform engineering, backend infrastructure, and developer tooling positions tend to have the highest share of fully remote arrangements.
How do you become a staff software engineer?
You typically reach the staff level by first establishing deep technical expertise as a senior engineer, then expanding your scope to influence architecture and engineering direction across multiple teams. The clearest path involves leading high-visibility projects, writing technical proposals that get adopted org-wide, and building a reputation for unblocking other engineers rather than just executing your own work.
Can you get hired as a staff software engineer without prior staff-level experience?
Yes, if you can demonstrate staff-level impact from a senior role. Companies making new headcount hires often consider strong senior engineers who have informally operated at the staff level, especially if you've owned a significant system end-to-end, mentored multiple engineers, or driven a technical migration. The interview process will test for that scope directly, so prepare concrete examples.
What does the staff software engineer interview process look like?
Most staff engineer loops include a recruiter screen, a technical phone interview, and an onsite or virtual loop with rounds covering systems design, coding, and a cross-functional or behavioral session focused on technical leadership. The systems design round carries significant weight, and many companies add a presentation or engineering strategy discussion to assess how you communicate tradeoffs to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders.
Where can I find and apply to staff software engineer jobs?
You can find and apply to staff software engineer jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from across the United States. Find roles that match your technical domain and seniority level, then apply directly to each listing from the page.
