Superintendent Jobs in Rhode Island: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a superintendent in Rhode Island?
The path depends on which type of superintendent role you are pursuing. For construction superintendents, the Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board oversees contractor licensing, and most employers require a combination of field experience and a degree in construction management or engineering. For school superintendents, Rhode Island requires certification through the Rhode Island Department of Education, including a graduate degree in educational leadership and a valid superintendent certificate issued by the state.
How much do superintendents make in Rhode Island?
Superintendents in Rhode Island earn a median of about $119,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,530 for the lowest 10% to over $150,300 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire superintendents in Rhode Island?
Companies currently hiring superintendents in Rhode Island include Gilbane, Tecta America, and Senesco Marine, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Rhode Island's active construction sector and its network of public school districts and healthcare institutions make it one of the more consistent markets for superintendent hiring in New England.
Which Rhode Island cities have the most superintendent jobs?
Providence, North Kingstown, and Cranston have the most superintendent openings in Rhode Island. Providence anchors the market as the state's largest city, home to major contractors, school district offices, and healthcare campuses, while Warwick and Cranston generate steady demand through commercial construction activity, suburban school systems, and large facility operations tied to T.F. Green International Airport and surrounding industrial corridors.
Are there remote superintendent jobs in Rhode Island?
Yes, but they're rare. Superintendent roles are largely on-site by nature, whether overseeing active construction projects or managing school district and facilities operations. About 14% of superintendent openings tied to Rhode Island are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those tend to be administrative or program-oversight positions rather than field-based roles. The most remote-compatible work involves reporting, compliance, and district-level planning functions.
How can I get hired as a superintendent in Rhode Island with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an assistant superintendent, project engineer, or field coordinator role with a Rhode Island construction firm or school district. Companies like Gilbane Building Company and Dimeo Construction hire project engineers and field associates who move into superintendent roles over time. In education, starting as a principal or curriculum director and pursuing Rhode Island Department of Education superintendent certification while in that role is the standard progression. A relevant graduate degree or Rhode Island contractor registration significantly strengthens early applications.
