Tax Accountant Jobs in Massachusetts: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in Massachusetts?
To work as a licensed tax accountant in Massachusetts, you must earn CPA licensure through the Massachusetts Board of Public Accountancy, which requires a bachelor's degree with qualifying accounting coursework, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam, and completing supervised work experience. Many Massachusetts employers also hire unlicensed accounting graduates into tax staff roles while they complete their CPA requirements, making the credential the clearest path to advancement.
How much do tax accountants make in Massachusetts?
Tax accountants in Massachusetts earn a median of about $58,400 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $37,560 for the lowest 10% to over $82,700 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in Massachusetts?
Employers hiring tax accountants in Massachusetts right now include AAFCPAs, SimpliSafe, and Itero, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Massachusetts's dense concentration of financial services firms, regional public accounting firms, and large life sciences companies creates consistent year-round openings beyond the busy season.
Which Massachusetts cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
Boston, Woburn, and Taunton have the most tax accountant openings in Massachusetts. Boston dominates due to its concentration of financial services headquarters, Big Four and regional accounting firms, and major corporations, while Worcester and other secondary markets draw demand from manufacturing, healthcare systems, and mid-market companies that maintain in-house tax functions.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in Massachusetts?
Yes, and more than most fields, since tax work is primarily desk-based and document-driven. About 88% of tax accountant openings tied to Massachusetts are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work. Individual income tax preparation and corporate compliance review tend to be the most remote-compatible functions, while roles requiring client meetings or state audit representation are more often on-site.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in Massachusetts with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is joining a regional or national public accounting firm in Massachusetts as a tax staff associate, where formal training programs onboard new graduates directly. Firms like Grant Thornton and BDO have Massachusetts offices that recruit from schools such as Northeastern, UMass Amherst, and Bentley University. Roles titled tax analyst or accounting associate at corporate employers are also common entry points, and pursuing the CPA exam actively while in these positions significantly accelerates hiring prospects.
