Tax Accountant Jobs in New Mexico: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax accountant in New Mexico?
To work as a licensed tax accountant in New Mexico, you must obtain a CPA license through the New Mexico Public Accountancy Board, which requires a bachelor's degree with qualifying accounting coursework, passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Examination, and completing the required hours of supervised work experience. Some employers also value the IRS Enrolled Agent credential for tax-focused roles, which has no state residency requirement and complements a CPA license well.
How much do tax accountants make in New Mexico?
Tax accountants in New Mexico earn a median of about $38,060 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $27,250 for the lowest 10% to over $60,000 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax accountants in New Mexico?
Companies currently hiring tax accountants in New Mexico include KPMG, SJHL, and James A. Dinkel P.C., per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. New Mexico's strong government contractor sector, anchored by national laboratories and defense agencies in Albuquerque and surrounding areas, generates particularly consistent demand for tax accounting professionals.
Which New Mexico cities have the most tax accountant jobs?
Albuquerque, Santa Fe, and Las Cruces have the most tax accountant openings in New Mexico. Albuquerque drives the bulk of listings given its concentration of regional corporate headquarters, national laboratories, hospital systems, and public accounting firms, while Santa Fe adds steady public-sector demand through state government agencies and Rio Rancho benefits from growing financial services employers relocating to the metro.
Are there remote tax accountant jobs in New Mexico?
Yes, and more than most fields. Tax accounting is highly desk-based and document-driven, which makes it well suited to remote work. About 56% of tax accountant openings tied to New Mexico are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting both national firm arrangements and New Mexico employers offering flexible schedules. Federal and state tax compliance work tends to be the most remote-compatible specialty.
How can I get hired as a tax accountant in New Mexico with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a staff accountant or tax associate role at one of Albuquerque's regional public accounting firms, which routinely hire recent graduates and provide structured training in New Mexico state and federal tax work. The University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University both have accounting programs whose graduates are recognized locally, and pursuing your CPA exam sections before or shortly after graduation gives you a clear edge. Adjacent roles such as bookkeeper, accounting clerk, or payroll specialist at a New Mexico employer are also common lateral starting points.
Where can I find and apply to tax accountant jobs in New Mexico?
You can find and apply to tax accountant jobs in New Mexico on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the roles available, find the ones that match your experience and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
