Tax Director Jobs in South Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a tax director in South Dakota?
Most tax directors in South Dakota hold a CPA license issued or recognized by the South Dakota Board of Accountancy, which requires passing all four sections of the Uniform CPA Exam and meeting the state's education and experience requirements. A bachelor's degree in accounting or finance is the standard starting point, often paired with a master's in taxation. From there, candidates typically advance through senior tax accountant and tax manager roles before reaching the director level.
How much do tax directors make in South Dakota?
Tax directors in South Dakota earn a median of about $78,880 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $61,190 for the lowest 10% to over $115,470 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire tax directors in South Dakota?
Companies currently hiring tax directors in South Dakota include Eide Bailly, Intuit, and Brady Martz, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. South Dakota's favorable tax climate, particularly its absence of a state corporate income tax, draws a disproportionate share of financial services and credit card operations to the state, making those sectors a consistent source of senior tax roles.
Which South Dakota cities have the most tax director jobs?
Sioux Falls, Aberdeen, and Yankton have the most tax director openings in South Dakota. Sioux Falls leads because it is home to the largest concentration of financial institutions and corporate regional offices in the state, while Rapid City and Aberdeen generate openings through healthcare systems, regional banks, and larger manufacturing operations anchored in those markets.
Are there remote tax director jobs in South Dakota?
Yes, and more than most fields, because tax director work is largely analytical, document-driven, and executable without a physical presence. About 8% of tax director openings tied to South Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting how well the role adapts to distributed work environments. Corporate tax compliance, tax research, and provision work are the functions most commonly performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a tax director in South Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic path is moving into a tax manager role first at one of South Dakota's large financial institutions or health systems, such as Sanford Health or a regional bank headquartered in Sioux Falls, and building toward the director level over several years. Lateral moves from senior financial analyst or controller roles are common entry points. Holding an active South Dakota CPA license gives candidates a measurable edge, and a master's in taxation can accelerate advancement in lieu of years of experience.
