Verify your credentials meet state licensure requirements
TN visa approval for Clinical Counselor roles depends partly on your ability to obtain state licensure. Research the specific state's LPC or LCSW requirements before applying, as some states require additional supervised hours for foreign-trained applicants.
Target employers with behavioral health infrastructure
Hospital systems, community mental health centers, and federally qualified health centers are accustomed to sponsoring TN professionals. Outpatient private practices often lack HR capacity to navigate the filing, so focus your search on larger institutional employers.
Use Migrate Mate to find sponsorship-ready Clinical Counselor roles
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers actively hiring Clinical Counselors under TN visa sponsorship. The platform surfaces roles by visa type, so you're not cold-applying to employers who haven't sponsored before.
Prepare a detailed support letter before your first offer
The TN support letter from your employer must describe your duties in specialty occupation terms, your qualifying degree, and the USMCA professional category. Draft a template early so the employer's HR team can adapt it accurately and quickly.
Distinguish your role from social work at the border or consulate
CBP officers sometimes conflate Clinical Counselor with Social Worker, which is a separate TN category with different credential requirements. Bring documentation showing your counseling degree and licensure track to preempt any classification dispute at entry.
Understand Mexican nationals face a separate filing process
Mexican TN applicants apply at a U.S. consulate in Mexico and receive a visa stamp rather than requesting admission at the border. Processing times vary by consulate, so schedule your appointment well before your intended start date.
Clinical Counselor TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does Clinical Counselor qualify for the TN visa?
Yes. Clinical Counselor is an explicitly listed occupation under the USMCA TN category. To qualify, you need a baccalaureate or licenciatura degree in counseling or a closely related field, and the job duties must align with professional counseling practice rather than general social services or case management work.
How does the TN visa compare to H-1B for Clinical Counselor roles?
The TN visa has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, which means you can start the process as soon as you have a job offer. H-1B visa selection is random and limited to 85,000 slots per year. TN approval is typically granted at the port of entry for Canadians, making timelines far shorter than H-1B adjudication through USCIS.
What documents does a Clinical Counselor need for TN admission?
You need a valid passport, a support letter from your U.S. employer on company letterhead describing your role and TN classification, proof of your qualifying degree, and evidence of any relevant licensure. Canadian citizens present these at the port of entry. Mexican nationals also need a valid TN visa stamp obtained through a U.S. consulate in Mexico.
Where can I find Clinical Counselor jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and surfaces Clinical Counselor roles from employers with active sponsorship history. Searching through general job boards rarely tells you whether an employer has TN experience, which creates friction late in the process when you're negotiating your start date.
Can I switch Clinical Counselor employers on a TN visa?
Yes, but you cannot begin work with the new employer under your existing TN status. You need a new TN approval tied to the new employer before your first day. Canadian citizens can get this at a port of entry, while Mexican nationals must obtain a new visa stamp at a U.S. consulate. Plan for a gap of at least several weeks when timing your transition.
