Align your credentials to specialty occupation standards
TN eligibility for Industrial Sales Representatives depends on holding a bachelor's degree in a field directly tied to the products you'll sell, such as mechanical engineering or industrial technology. A general business degree alone may not satisfy a skeptical CBP officer.
Target manufacturers with complex technical product lines
Employers selling industrial automation equipment, precision components, or specialty chemicals are far more likely to sponsor TN status because they need reps who can credibly demonstrate degree-level technical knowledge to buyers, not just relationship managers.
Request a detailed support letter from your employer
Your employer's support letter must describe your specific duties, the technical products involved, and why your degree field is required for the role. A vague letter citing generic sales responsibilities is one of the most common reasons CBP denies TN entry for this occupation.
Confirm TN eligibility before negotiating your offer
Ask your hiring manager whether the role has been approved for TN status before before you finalize any start date. Some industrial sales positions are structured around territory management rather than technical consultation, which can complicate TN qualification during the offer stage.
Use Migrate Mate to find employers with recent visa filings
Filtering your job search to companies experienced with visa sponsorship saves time and reduces rejection risk. Migrate Mate surfaces employers by role and recent visa filing history so you're not starting from scratch with cold outreach.
Prepare for CBP scrutiny on commission-based compensation structures
If your offer includes a draw-against-commission pay structure, bring documentation showing your total guaranteed compensation aligns with the role's professional standards, since USCIS officers sometimes flag variable pay arrangements as inconsistent with professional-level employment for TN purposes.

Find Industrial Sales Representative JobsIndustrial Sales Representative TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Industrial Sales Representative role qualify for TN visa status?
It can, but the classification depends on how the role is defined. TN status is available to engineers and certain management consultants, and Industrial Sales Representatives qualify when the position requires applying engineering or scientific knowledge at a degree level. Roles focused primarily on relationship-driven territory sales without a technical component are harder to support under TN criteria.
How does TN visa sponsorship compare to H-1B for this role?
TN has no annual lottery, no cap for Canadian citizens, and can be approved at the U.S. border on the same day for Canadians. H-1B requires USCIS petition approval and is subject to an annual cap with a random selection process. For Industrial Sales Representatives whose roles clearly require a technical degree, TN is typically faster and carries no uncertainty around lottery selection.
What documents should I bring to the border if I'm a Canadian applying for TN status?
You'll need a valid Canadian passport, your employer's support letter describing your job duties and the technical products involved, proof of your qualifying degree, and evidence that the role requires professional-level technical knowledge. A copy of your offer letter and any product literature that demonstrates the technical nature of the position can also strengthen your case with a CBP officer.
Where can I find Industrial Sales Representative jobs that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for Canadian and Mexican professionals searching for jobs that may qualify for TN status. You can search by occupation and filter results to employers with recent visa filings, which removes the guesswork of approaching companies that have experience sponsoring work visas. This increases the likelihood you'll find roles at employers familiar with the visa sponsorship process for industrial sales positions.
Can Mexican citizens apply for TN status as an Industrial Sales Representative?
Yes, but the process differs from the Canadian path. Mexican citizens must apply for a TN visa at a U.S. consulate rather than seeking approval at the border, and Mexico has a separate numerical allocation under USMCA. The same degree and job duty requirements apply, so the support letter and credential documentation are equally important for a successful consular application.
