Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Public Relations Intern
Verify your degree matches PR specialist criteria
TN visa status for PR roles requires a degree in communications, journalism, or public relations specifically. A general business or marketing degree won't automatically qualify. Confirm your transcript reflects the right field before applying.
Target agencies with active government contracts
Public affairs firms and agencies holding federal or state contracts are accustomed to sponsoring foreign nationals and navigating TN paperwork. They're more likely to have internal processes for supporting your visa status from day one.
Get your offer letter to name your TN category explicitly
Your employer's offer letter must identify your role under the TN PR Specialist category. A vague title like 'communications intern' creates border officer confusion. Ask HR to align the letter's language with USCIS TN occupation definitions.
Use Migrate Mate to filter TN-sponsoring employers
Searching broadly wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN requirements. Migrate Mate lets you filter specifically for companies that sponsor TN visas, so you're targeting PR internship roles where sponsorship is already in place.
Prepare for Canadian border processing with complete documents
As a Canadian citizen, you can apply for TN status directly at a port of entry. Bring your degree credentials, the employer offer letter, and a one-page role description. Missing any document risks a same-day denial.
Confirm your employer understands TN has no filing fee window
Unlike H-1B visa, TN approval for Canadians happens at the border without advance USCIS filing. Some HR teams don't know this and delay unnecessarily waiting for a petition number. Clarify the process so your start date isn't pushed back.
Public Relations Intern TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Public Relations Intern role qualify for TN visa status?
It can, but the role must meet the TN PR Specialist criteria, meaning the position must genuinely require a bachelor's degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a closely related field. An internship titled broadly as 'marketing support' or 'general assistant' is unlikely to qualify. The offer letter and job duties need to align clearly with the PR Specialist occupation as defined under USMCA.
How does TN visa sponsorship for PR interns compare to H-1B?
TN has no annual lottery and no cap for Canadian citizens, so you're not competing against tens of thousands of applicants for a limited number of slots the way H-1B requires. Canadian professionals can often start within days of receiving an offer by presenting documents at a port of entry. Mexican citizens require consular processing, which adds time but still avoids the H-1B lottery entirely.
Where can I find PR internships that offer TN visa sponsorship?
Most generic job boards don't filter by visa sponsorship type, so you spend time on roles that won't work. Migrate Mate is built specifically for TN visa job seekers and lets you search Public Relations Intern roles by employers already set up to sponsor. That means you're not cold-educating HR teams about what TN status requires.
What documents does my employer need to prepare for my TN application?
Your employer needs to provide a formal offer letter that includes your job title aligned to the PR Specialist TN category, a description of your duties, your required qualifications, and your anticipated start date. For Canadian citizens processed at the border, this letter is your primary filing document. For Mexican citizens, the employer may also need to support a DS-160 and consular appointment documentation.
Can I switch employers mid-internship while on TN status?
Yes, but TN status is employer-specific. If you move to a new employer, they must initiate a new TN application before you begin working for them. For Canadians, that typically means another border crossing with updated offer documents. You cannot simply transfer your existing TN status from one employer to another the way some other visa categories allow portability.
