Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding TN Visa Sponsorship as a Strategic Business Development
Frame your degree as management-adjacent
TN eligibility for business development roles hinges on the Management Consultant category. A degree in business administration, economics, or commerce strengthens your case. A marketing or engineering degree requires a tighter narrative connecting your credentials to strategic consulting work.
Target employers with cross-border revenue lines
Companies generating revenue in Canada or Mexico are more likely to understand TN sponsorship mechanics and value bilingual business development talent. Focus your search on firms with active USMCA trade exposure rather than purely domestic operations.
Request a consulting-framed offer letter
Your employer's offer letter must describe duties that mirror management consulting: analyzing markets, developing growth strategies, advising on business expansion. Generic titles like 'sales manager' or 'account executive' routinely trigger CBP scrutiny, even when the underlying work qualifies.
Use Migrate Mate to surface sponsoring employers
Searching broadly for business development roles wastes time on employers unfamiliar with TN. Migrate Mate filters for companies actively sponsoring TN visas, so you're targeting employers who already understand the process before your first conversation.
Prepare for Canadian border TN on your first entry
Canadians don't file with USCIS in advance. You present your offer letter, degree credentials, and supporting documents directly to CBP at a port of entry or pre-clearance site. A complete, well-organized packet dramatically reduces adjudication time on the spot.
Clarify your TN status before starting any work
Mexican professionals must obtain TN status at a U.S. consulate before beginning employment. Starting a business development role while consular processing is pending, even remotely, creates unauthorized employment exposure that can affect future TN and immigrant visa applications.

Find Strategic Business Development JobsStrategic Business Development TN Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Strategic Business Development role qualify for a TN visa?
Yes, but the classification depends on how your duties are framed. TN visas cover Management Consultants under USMCA, so your offer letter must describe work involving strategic analysis, market development, or business advisory functions. Roles titled 'sales' or 'account management' without a consulting component are more likely to be denied at the border or consulate.
How does TN compare to H-1B for Strategic Business Development professionals?
TN has no lottery, no annual cap for Canadians, and no USCIS petition process for Canadians, which means you can secure status in a single trip to the border. H-1B requires winning a lottery with roughly a one-in-four chance per registration. The tradeoff is that TN must be renewed with each employer change and doesn't lead directly to a green card the way H-1B can.
What degree do I need to qualify for TN status in a business development role?
A bachelor's degree or higher in business administration, commerce, economics, or a closely related field is the baseline. Your degree doesn't need to say 'management consulting,' but CBP or a consular officer will look for a logical connection between your academic background and the strategic, advisory nature of the role your employer is offering.
How do I find employers who will sponsor a TN visa for business development positions?
Most employers list roles without specifying TN sponsorship, which makes identifying willing sponsors time-consuming. Migrate Mate aggregates job listings by companies with recent visa filings, so you can focus your outreach on employers already experienced with work visa sponsorship rather than educating hiring managers from scratch.
Can I switch business development employers on a TN visa without losing status?
You can change employers, but your TN status is tied to the specific employer listed on your current approval. Canadians typically need to re-enter at a port of entry with a new offer letter and supporting documents to obtain TN status for the new employer. Mexican professionals must return to a U.S. consulate. Working for the new employer before completing this step creates unauthorized employment.
