Transportation Engineer Jobs in Georgia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a transportation engineer in Georgia?
To become a licensed transportation engineer in Georgia, you need a bachelor's degree in civil or transportation engineering from an accredited program, pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam to earn Engineer Intern status, then accumulate qualifying experience before sitting for the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam through the Georgia State Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. Many Georgia employers hire EI-registered graduates into junior roles while they work toward full PE licensure.
How much do transportation engineers make in Georgia?
Transportation engineers in Georgia earn a median of about $84,240 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $62,850 for the lowest 10% to over $153,690 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire transportation engineers in Georgia?
Employers hiring transportation engineers in Georgia right now include EFK Moen, CDM Smith, and Ryder System, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Georgia's combination of GDOT-managed state projects, Atlanta-area municipal contracts, and growing port-related freight infrastructure keeps a broad mix of public agencies and private engineering consultants actively recruiting across experience levels.
Which Georgia cities have the most transportation engineer jobs?
Atlanta, Alpharetta, and Chamblee have the most transportation engineer openings in Georgia. Atlanta dominates hiring as the state's primary hub for GDOT headquarters, major engineering consultancies, and regional planning agencies, while Savannah's continued port expansion and Augusta's proximity to Fort Eisenhower generate steady demand for transportation engineers outside the metro.
Are there remote transportation engineer jobs in Georgia?
Yes, but they're rare. About 89% of transportation engineer openings tied to Georgia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, reflecting the field's hands-on project oversight and field inspection requirements. The tasks most commonly performed remotely include traffic data analysis, transportation modeling, report writing, and plan review, while site visits and agency coordination typically require in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a transportation engineer in Georgia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an Engineer Intern designation through the Georgia State Board after completing your engineering degree, then targeting GDOT's entry-level engineer positions or graduate rotational programs at consulting firms like Kimley-Horn, Jacobs, or Arcadis, all of which maintain Georgia offices and recruit new graduates. Internships through GDOT's university partnership programs and lateral moves from civil design or construction inspection roles also open doors, and having AutoCAD or GIS skills gives candidates a clear edge in initial screenings.
Where can I find and apply to transportation engineer jobs in Georgia?
You can find and apply to transportation engineer jobs in Georgia on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Search the listings, identify roles that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
