UI Designer Jobs in Washington: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a ui designer in Washington?
UI design in Washington has no state-issued license or registration requirement, so entry follows an experience and education path. Most Washington employers look for a degree in interaction design, visual communication, human-computer interaction, or a closely related field, though a strong portfolio can offset formal education. Seattle and Bellevue's dense tech sector means candidates who build experience with design systems and prototyping tools are consistently the strongest applicants.
How much do UI designers make in Washington?
UI designers in Washington earn a median of about $72,710 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $47,780 for the lowest 10% to over $115,210 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire ui designers in Washington?
Employers hiring ui designers in Washington right now include Amazon, Amazon Web Services, and Microsoft, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Washington's concentration of major technology headquarters and enterprise software companies makes it one of the most consistently active states for ui designer hiring year-round.
Which Washington cities have the most ui designer jobs?
The cities with the most ui designer openings in Washington are Seattle, Bellevue, and Redmond. Seattle dominates because of its headquarters-dense tech and e-commerce sector, while Bellevue and Redmond draw volume from large campuses like Microsoft and the broader Eastside corridor, making the greater Seattle metro the clear center of Washington's ui designer market.
Are there remote ui designer jobs in Washington?
Yes, and more than most fields. UI design is a desk-based, screen-driven discipline, so remote and hybrid arrangements are broadly compatible with the work. About 54% of ui designer openings tied to Washington are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how normalized flexible work has become across Washington's technology sector. Research and stakeholder collaboration are the parts most likely to require some in-person presence.
How can I get hired as a ui designer in Washington with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is building a focused portfolio through personal projects, open-source contributions, or volunteer work with nonprofits before applying to associate or junior ui designer roles at Washington's mid-size product companies. Amazon and Microsoft both run university hire and rotational programs for early-career designers. Adjacent roles like UX researcher, visual designer, or marketing designer at Washington agencies are also common stepping stones, and completing a recognized interaction design certification strengthens any candidate without a traditional degree.
