Job Description
The Network Security Architect will design and build the network security architecture our environment runs on, from firewall and segmentation design through cloud network architecture, and will stay engaged through implementation alongside engineering, not hand off a design and move on.
The Network Security Architect role sits within the Chief Information Security Officer Office, reporting to the Director of Security Architecture and Engineering (SA&E).
Essential Functions

Designs network security architecture from the ground up: firewall policy and configuration, network segmentation, Zero Trust access design, and cloud network architecture in Microsoft Azure.
-
Leads technical migrations end to end: assesses the current environment, designs the target state, builds the configuration, and manages the cutover.
-
Works directly alongside engineering through the build and implementation phase of every project they design, adjusting the design in real time when engineering encounters something the design did not account for. This role is expected to close the gap between architecture and engineering, not operate on one side of it.
-
Reviews existing network security architecture, identifies gaps, and designs the remediation, including hands on work to resolve technical debt in legacy configurations.
-
Assesses, scopes, and estimates the work and hours required to deliver security architecture components of larger projects and programs.
-
Serves as the technical expert and trusted advisor to engineering, IT, and business partners on network security design questions.
-
Documents and diagrams architecture in both conceptual and physical form, including the underlying configuration, not just high level diagrams.

Works assigned Request Security Architecture (RSA) tickets and related efforts in ServiceNow.
-
Stays current on emerging network security technologies and threats and incorporates them into architecture as needed.
Additional Responsibilities
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities

-
Advanced, hands on knowledge of network technologies: protocols, design concepts, segmentation, and access control.
-
Advanced, hands on knowledge of security technologies: encryption, data protection, access privilege design.
-
Direct configuration experience with firewall platforms, not solely policy or diagram level experience.

Which companies sponsor visas for security engineers in Alabama?
Defense contractors with significant Huntsville operations, including Leidos, SAIC, Northrop Grumman, and Booz Allen Hamilton, are among the more active sponsors for security engineers in Alabama. Birmingham-based employers in banking, healthcare IT, and managed services also file H-1B visa petitions for security roles. Sponsorship activity varies by company and fiscal year, so checking recent LCA filings is a reliable way to identify active sponsors.
Which visa types are most common for security engineer roles in Alabama?
The H-1B is the most common visa category for security engineers in Alabama, covering roles that require a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, cybersecurity, information systems, or a related field. TN visas are available to Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles. Candidates with extraordinary ability may qualify for the O-1 visa. Security clearance requirements at many Alabama defense employers can complicate sponsorship for some visa holders.
Which cities in Alabama have the most security engineer sponsorship jobs?
Huntsville generates the largest share of security engineer sponsorship activity in Alabama, driven by its dense concentration of defense contractors and the presence of Redstone Arsenal and the Missile Defense Agency. Birmingham is the second-largest hub, supported by financial services firms, hospital systems, and technology companies. Smaller sponsorship activity exists in Montgomery and Tuscaloosa, often tied to state government contractors and university-affiliated research.
How to find security engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Alabama?
Migrate Mate filters security engineer jobs in Alabama by visa sponsorship status, so you can focus exclusively on employers already open to sponsoring. This saves significant time compared to sifting through general job postings. Roles listed on Migrate Mate span Huntsville's defense sector and Birmingham's financial and healthcare technology employers, covering H-1B-eligible positions across experience levels from mid-level analysts to senior security architects.
Are there state-specific considerations for security engineers seeking visa sponsorship in Alabama?
Alabama's defense sector is a defining factor. Many security engineer roles at Huntsville contractors require or strongly prefer a U.S. security clearance, which most nonimmigrant visa holders cannot obtain, significantly narrowing the pool of sponsorship-eligible openings. Roles outside the defense corridor, particularly in Birmingham's banking and healthcare technology sectors, generally do not have clearance requirements and represent more accessible sponsorship opportunities for international candidates. UAB and Alabama A&M also generate some local hiring pipelines.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored security engineer jobs in Alabama?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
