Which government employers in California sponsor Green Card visas?
Federal agencies with major California operations are among the most active Green Card sponsors in the public sector. These include national laboratories like Lawrence Livermore, Lawrence Berkeley, and Sandia (California site), along with NASA Ames Research Center and various Department of Defense installations. State-level agencies and public universities such as the University of California system also sponsor permanent residence for specialized research and technical positions.
Which cities in California have the most government Green Card sponsorship jobs?
Sacramento has the highest concentration of state government roles with sponsorship potential. The San Francisco Bay Area, particularly the East Bay corridor near Berkeley and Livermore, is home to multiple national laboratories that actively sponsor permanent residence. Los Angeles and San Diego both have significant federal agency and defense-related employer presences, and Pasadena hosts JPL, another active federal research employer.
What types of government roles in California typically qualify for Green Card sponsorship?
Government and public sector employers most commonly sponsor Green Card petitions for roles requiring highly specialized expertise. This includes research scientists, engineers (electrical, mechanical, aerospace, and software), cybersecurity analysts, public health specialists, and policy researchers. These positions typically qualify under the EB-2 or EB-3 employment-based categories, and some researchers at national laboratories may qualify for the EB-1B outstanding researcher classification.
How do I find government Green Card sponsorship jobs in California?
Migrate Mate is a job board built specifically for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, including Green Card sponsorship in the government and public sector. You can filter by California, by industry, and by visa type to surface government roles where employers have indicated sponsorship willingness. This saves significant time compared to manually reviewing individual agency postings to determine whether each employer supports permanent residence filings.
Are there any California-specific considerations for Green Card sponsorship in government roles?
California public employers, including state agencies and the UC system, generally cannot sponsor H-1B visas due to state law restrictions, but many can and do support Green Card sponsorship through the PERM labor certification process for permanent positions. Federal agencies and national laboratories operating in California are not subject to this restriction. Candidates should also be aware that national laboratory positions often require security clearances, which can complicate or extend the sponsorship timeline.
What is the prevailing wage for Green Card government jobs in California?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
