Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Hawaii?
The largest sponsors of physician visas in Hawaii include The Queen's Health Systems, Hawaii Pacific Health, Kaiser Permanente Hawaii, and Straub Medical Center. Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) and rural health clinics on the neighbor islands also sponsor physicians, often through the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, which is heavily utilized in Hawaii due to the state's federally designated Health Professional Shortage Areas.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Hawaii?
The J-1 visa with a Conrad 30 waiver and the H-1B are the two most common visa pathways for physicians in Hawaii. J-1 waiver positions are especially prevalent because Hawaii consistently fills a significant portion of its 30 annual Conrad slots. O-1 visas apply to physicians with demonstrated national or international recognition, while EB-1A and NIW green card pathways are options for those pursuing permanent residency.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Hawaii?
Migrate Mate is a job board specifically built for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship, and it filters physician roles in Hawaii by sponsorship willingness. Because Hawaii has persistent physician shortages, sponsored positions across primary care, hospitalist medicine, and specialty fields appear regularly on Migrate Mate. Filtering by state and role lets you identify which health systems are actively hiring without sifting through postings from employers who do not sponsor.
Which cities in Hawaii have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Honolulu on Oahu accounts for the majority of physician sponsorship opportunities, given its concentration of major health systems and specialty practices. Hilo and Kailua-Kona on the Big Island see consistent demand, particularly for primary care physicians in shortage areas. Maui (Kahului and Wailuku) and Kauai also have sponsored openings, typically through Hawaii Pacific Health affiliates and community health centers serving underserved populations.
Are there state-specific considerations for physician visa sponsorship in Hawaii?
Hawaii's HPSA and Medically Underserved Area designations are central to physician sponsorship here. These federal designations make Hawaii employers eligible to offer J-1 Conrad 30 waivers, which require a three-year service commitment in an underserved area. Hawaii also licenses physicians through the Hawaii Medical Board, and international medical graduates must hold ECFMG certification and meet standard U.S. residency completion requirements before a sponsor can file a visa petition.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Hawaii?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
