Which companies sponsor visas for nurses in Illinois?
Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, the University of Chicago Medicine, Advocate Aurora Health, and NorthShore University HealthSystem are among the larger Illinois health systems with documented histories of sponsoring international nurses. Many long-term care operators and staffing agencies focused on healthcare placements also file sponsorship petitions, particularly for registered nurses in high-demand units like ICU, med-surg, and telemetry.
Which visa types are most common for nursing roles in Illinois?
The EB-3 immigrant visa is the most common pathway for internationally trained nurses in Illinois, typically paired with PERM labor certification filed by the sponsoring employer. The H-1B visa applies to advanced practice roles such as nurse practitioners and clinical nurse specialists, where a master's-level specialty occupation argument is more straightforward. Some nurses enter on TN visa status if they are Canadian or Mexican citizens, as registered nursing is a designated TN occupation.
How to find nursing visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters nursing jobs in Illinois specifically to roles where employers have indicated willingness to sponsor work visas, saving you from applying to positions that won't support international candidates. Search by city or facility type to target Chicago's major academic medical centers or downstate community hospitals. Reviewing active job listings on Migrate Mate alongside each employer's publicly filed PERM and H-1B disclosure data gives you a clearer picture of genuine sponsorship activity.
Which cities in Illinois have the most nursing sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the majority of nursing sponsorship activity in Illinois, driven by its concentration of academic medical centers, Level I trauma centers, and large community hospitals on the North and South sides. The suburbs, including Evanston, Oak Lawn, and Naperville, add significant volume through facilities affiliated with major health systems. Peoria, Springfield, and Rockford each have regional hospital networks that periodically sponsor international nurses, particularly for hard-to-fill specialties.
Are there state-specific considerations for internationally trained nurses seeking sponsorship in Illinois?
International nurses must obtain Illinois licensure through the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation, which requires a credentials evaluation and passing the NCLEX-RN. Internationally educated applicants often work with credential evaluation services to have their foreign nursing education assessed before a license is issued. Illinois employers sponsoring nurses for EB-3 visas must also comply with Department of Labor prevailing wage requirements, meaning the offered position must meet wage standards for the specific occupation and geographic area.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored nursing jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
