Which companies sponsor visas for respiratory therapists in Illinois?
The largest sponsors in Illinois are major Chicago-area health systems: Northwestern Medicine, Rush University Medical Center, University of Chicago Medicine, and Advocate Health Care. OSF HealthCare, which operates extensively in Peoria and central Illinois, has also filed sponsored positions for respiratory therapists. Academic medical centers tend to have dedicated HR infrastructure for navigating H-1B and permanent residence sponsorship, which makes them more consistent sponsors than smaller community hospitals.
Which visa types are most common for respiratory therapist roles in Illinois?
H-1B is the most common visa for respiratory therapists in Illinois, as the role generally qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in respiratory care. EB-3 is the predominant immigrant visa pathway, frequently used by large health systems for permanent sponsorship. Some employers also use TN visas for Canadian and Mexican nationals who hold qualifying credentials and a job offer from an Illinois employer.
How to find respiratory therapist visa sponsorship jobs in Illinois?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship status, so you can search respiratory therapist roles in Illinois without sorting through positions that don't support international candidates. The platform surfaces openings at health systems and hospitals that have a documented history of sponsoring work visas, which saves significant time compared to applying broadly and asking each employer individually about their sponsorship policies.
Which cities in Illinois have the most respiratory therapist sponsorship jobs?
Chicago accounts for the large majority of sponsored respiratory therapist positions in Illinois, given the concentration of academic medical centers and large hospital networks in the metro area. Peoria is the next most active market, anchored by OSF HealthCare and UnityPoint Health Methodist. Rockford and Springfield have smaller but active hospital markets where sponsored openings appear periodically, particularly when regional facilities face staffing shortages.
Are there any Illinois-specific considerations for respiratory therapists seeking visa sponsorship?
Illinois requires respiratory therapists to hold a state license from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation before practicing. International candidates must have their credentials evaluated for equivalency, and most employers require passing the NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist exam. Illinois is a prevailing wage state for H-1B purposes, meaning sponsored employers must pay wages meeting Department of Labor standards for the specific region, which differs between Chicago metro and downstate markets.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored respiratory therapist jobs in Illinois?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
