Objective

The primary responsibility of this position is to enter and maintain accurate, up to date information of sow farm production activities. This will require entering and uploading production data of the activity from the farms. This position will be required to provide timely and accurate feedback to the farm managers and employees regarding sow records.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

• Good computer skills, with experience in sow record keeping software. Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel a plus.
• Must have thorough understanding of the farrowing, weaning, and breeding activities that occur on a sow farm.
• Must be detail oriented.
• Must be organized and able to prioritize functions, and manage time effectively.
• Must be able to effectively communicate in English verbally and in writing.
• Must have basic math skills.
• Must possess ability to regulating communicate critical information to Managers and team members on a routine basis.
• Ability to recognize if data has variation of outside of normal production parameters.
• Must function as a team player.
• Driver's license and good driving record.

Physical Job Requirements

• Job task will require extensive walking while collecting data.
• Job tasks will require sitting for extensive periods while reviewing and entering data.

Work Environment

• Data collection will occur inside barns where it is loud and dusty.
• Data entry will occur in an office setting.

Main Responsibilities

• Enter and keep accurate production data records regarding heat cycles, semen used, insemination dates, conception rates, farrowing process, piglets born, mortality, feed usage, mortality events, daily breed, farrow, and wean activity in farm production software.
• Understand and follow biosecurity procedures in place to assist with disease prevention when walking in the different areas of the farm, respecting clean/dirty lines, sanitizing equipment and rooms in between groups of sows, and others.
• Physical verification of production data being reported and communication with Farm Manager on any discrepancies.
• Assist with the reconciliation of discrepancies between production software, sow inventories, and wean pig placements to actual numbers.
• Read weekly production reports and review for accuracy and reasonability.
• Observe animals to identify animals in heat and project number of animals to be bred, ensure proper steps are followed for artificial insemination to achieve highest success rate for conception.
• Assist with planning and preparing for weaning of piglets by preparing farrowing rooms, farm hallways, proper premise ID registration, and maintaining site and following finishing procedures.
• Manage breeding stock by handling gilts and sows between gestation and farrowing, completing sow cards, and communicating with Anima Techs to ensure rooms are maintained with required feed, medications, and equipment.
• Safely operate farm systems, vehicles, equipment, and farm machinery.
• Plan and prepare for farrowing; reading and interpreting farm records to identify goals, requirements, and number of pigs to be weaned.
• Provide food to animals based on their nutritional requirements at current growth stages, ensuring body condition meet company standards, make feed adjustments (amount and feed type) when necessary.
• Monitor farrows and annotate findings during the process such as total born, deformities, mortality incidents.
• Verify farrowing pens are set up for farrowing process to begin, ensure rooms temperatures are adequate for sows and piglets.
• Operate and troubleshoot ventilation, feed, and water systems used in livestock housing, troubleshooting options, and the ability to identify major issues that need addressed by Engineers.
• Have an understanding of production costs and controllable factors within the farm that can be improved to maintain adequate costs of production.
• Review and understand farm budgets for work hours, material, breed targets and take corrective actions when variances start to occur.
