Which companies sponsor visas for physicians in Iowa?
The largest physician visa sponsors in Iowa include UnityPoint Health, MercyOne, and University of Iowa Health Care. Regional health systems like Genesis Health System and Iowa Clinic also sponsor international physicians. Critical Access Hospitals in rural counties frequently sponsor physicians on J-1 visa waivers tied to underserved area service commitments, given persistent shortages outside the Des Moines and Iowa City metro areas.
Which visa types are most common for physician roles in Iowa?
The J-1 visa with a Conrad 30 waiver is the most common pathway for international physicians in Iowa, particularly for primary care and psychiatry roles in Health Professional Shortage Areas. The H-1B visa is used for hospital-employed specialists and academic physicians at institutions like the University of Iowa. Some Canadian and Mexican physicians pursue TN visa status for qualifying physician roles.
Which cities in Iowa have the most physician sponsorship jobs?
Des Moines has the highest concentration of physician sponsorship opportunities, anchored by MercyOne and UnityPoint Health's flagship facilities. Iowa City follows closely due to University of Iowa Health Care, which drives both clinical and academic physician hiring. Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Sioux City also have active markets. Rural counties across central and western Iowa consistently post sponsored roles tied to shortage area designations.
How to find physician visa sponsorship jobs in Iowa?
Migrate Mate is a dedicated job board that filters physician roles by visa sponsorship status, making it straightforward to identify Iowa employers actively hiring international candidates. Rather than sorting through general postings, you can browse verified sponsorship-eligible physician positions across health systems, hospitals, and rural clinics throughout Iowa, including roles tied to J-1 Conrad 30 waivers and H-1B petitions.
Are there state-specific considerations for physicians seeking sponsorship in Iowa?
Iowa participates in the Conrad 30 J-1 waiver program, allocating up to 30 waivers annually for physicians who commit to practicing in underserved areas for at least three years. Iowa's Office of Rural Health coordinates the state's waiver nominations. Physicians completing service in a federally designated Health Professional Shortage Area may also become eligible for National Interest Waiver petitions, which allow self-sponsored green card applications without employer-specific labor certification.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored physician jobs in Iowa?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
