The Director of Cloud Platform Engineering is a senior technology leader responsible for building, operating, and evolving enterprise-grade cloud platforms that power critical healthcare services. This leader will drive the vision, strategy, and execution of cloud platform capabilities with a strong emphasis on product engineering, automation, and secure-by-design architectures.
Reporting to senior technology leadership, this role partners closely with application engineering, architecture, security, data, and AI teams to deliver resilient, scalable, and compliant cloud platforms. The Director leads a large, multi-disciplinary organization and ensures platforms are delivered using modern Agile delivery practices and infrastructure-as-code (IaC) standards.
This role blends deep technical credibility with strong people leadership and enterprise-scale execution experience. The Director of Cloud Platform Engineering performs technical planning, architecture development and modification of specifications for cloud computing environments. Develops specifications for new IT cloud computing products and service offerings. Assesses the compatibility and integration of products/services proposed as standards in order to ensure an integrated architecture across interdependent technologies. Decisions are typically related to the implementation of new/updated programs or large-scale projects for the function and supporting technical/operational procedures and processes, and implements strategic plans, drives goals and objectives, and improves performance.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Organization
- Lead, coach, and develop a cloud platform engineering organization of ~60 engineers, architects and associate directors, fostering a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement
- Establish clear career paths, performance expectations, and succession plans for a large technical organization
- Build a product-minded engineering culture focused on customer value, reliability, and operational excellence
Platform Product Engineering
- Own the cloud platform roadmap and treat platform capabilities as internal products with defined outcomes, SLAs, and adoption metrics
- Drive platform standardization while enabling flexibility for diverse application and business needs
- Partner with enterprise architecture to align platform capabilities with long-term technology strategy
Cloud & Kubernetes Platforms
- Oversee design, delivery, and operation of large-scale cloud and Kubernetes-based platforms supporting mission-critical workloads
- Ensure platforms are highly available, fault tolerant, scalable, and cost-efficient
- Enable developer self-service through standardized tooling, templates, and automation
Infrastructure as Code & Automation
- Enforce infrastructure-as-code (IaC) as the standard for all platform development and operations
- Drive automation across provisioning, configuration, security controls, and lifecycle management
- Continuously reduce manual operations through CI/CD, GitOps, and policy-as-code practices
AI Infrastructure Enablement
- Lead delivery of AI infrastructure platforms, including GPU-enabled compute
- Partner with data science and AI teams to ensure platforms support experimentation, training, and production-scale inference
- Ensure AI platforms meet enterprise standards for security, compliance, scalability, and cost management
Agile Delivery & Operational Excellence
- Ensure platform teams deliver using Agile and DevOps methodologies, emphasizing iterative delivery and fast feedback loops
- Establish strong observability, incident management, and reliability practices
- Define and track KPIs related to platform stability, delivery velocity, customer satisfaction, and cost optimization
Security, Risk & Compliance
- Partner closely with cybersecurity to design and operate secure cloud platforms aligned with healthcare regulatory requirements
- Embed security controls, identity, network segmentation, and compliance automation directly into platform services
- Ensure platforms meet internal and external audit requirements, including HIPAA and enterprise risk standards
Vendor & Financial Management
- Lead vendor management for cloud service providers, platform tooling vendors, and strategic partners
- Manage platform budgets, forecasting, and cloud cost optimization efforts
- Negotiate contracts and influence vendor roadmaps to align with enterprise needs

Required Qualifications
- 10+ years of technology experience
- 5+ years leading large-scale cloud or platform engineering teams
- Demonstrated experience leading a remote workforce of engineers/architects across multiple teams and technical domains
- Deep experience with public cloud platforms and Kubernetes at enterprise scale
- Proven success delivering platforms using Agile methodologies and modern DevOps practices
- Strong hands-on understanding of Infrastructure as Code (e.g., Terraform, ARM, Bicep, CloudFormation)
- Experience delivering and operating AI infrastructure
- Strong background in security-focused cloud design and working in regulated environments
- Experience with vendor management, contract negotiation, and financial oversight
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
- Experience in healthcare, financial services, or other highly regulated industries
