Which science and research companies sponsor H-1B visas in Kentucky?
The University of Kentucky and University of Louisville are among the most active H-1B visa sponsors for research roles in the state, covering positions in biomedical sciences, chemistry, and engineering. Private-sector sponsors include pharmaceutical and manufacturing firms with R&D functions, such as operations tied to Toyota's engineering center in Georgetown and life sciences companies in the Louisville metro area. Federal research contractors operating near Fort Campbell also file H-1B petitions for scientific staff.
Which cities in Kentucky have the most science and research H-1B sponsorship jobs?
Lexington leads the state for science and research H-1B sponsorship, driven by the University of Kentucky's academic medical center and affiliated research institutes. Louisville is the second-largest hub, anchored by the University of Louisville, Norton Healthcare research programs, and a growing life sciences cluster. Smaller concentrations exist in Bowling Green, where Western Kentucky University sponsors researchers, and in Georgetown and Richmond, which have manufacturing-linked engineering and materials science roles.
What types of science and research roles typically qualify for H-1B sponsorship in Kentucky?
Roles that require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific scientific or technical field qualify as specialty occupations under H-1B rules. In Kentucky, commonly sponsored positions include postdoctoral researchers, biomedical scientists, chemists, environmental scientists, data scientists, and research engineers. Clinical research coordinators with relevant life sciences degrees and laboratory directors in university hospital systems also regularly appear in H-1B Labor Condition Application filings for Kentucky employers.
How do I find science and research H-1B sponsorship jobs in Kentucky?
Migrate Mate filters science and research positions specifically by H-1B sponsorship history, so you can see which Kentucky employers have filed Labor Condition Applications for roles matching your field. Search by the science and research category within Kentucky to surface active openings at universities, research hospitals, and private R&D employers. Because LCA filing history is drawn from DOL data, results reflect verified sponsorship activity rather than employer self-reporting.
Are there any Kentucky-specific considerations for H-1B sponsorship in science and research?
Kentucky's science and research sector is heavily anchored by public universities, which are cap-exempt H-1B employers. This means researchers hired by institutions like the University of Kentucky or University of Louisville are not subject to the annual H-1B lottery and can start employment as soon as USCIS approves the petition. For private-sector science roles, standard cap and lottery rules apply. Kentucky also has growing life sciences and advanced manufacturing R&D activity supported in part by state economic development incentives, which has expanded the pool of private sponsors over recent years.
What is the prevailing wage for H-1B science & research jobs in Kentucky?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
