Located in Baltimore’s cultural center near the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, UMMC Midtown Campus is a 180-bed, community teaching hospital with a focus on helping people manage chronic diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, pulmonary conditions, and infectious diseases.

General Summary

Renders nursing care to all patients within her/his assigned unit/area, implementing the nursing process from admission through discharge, under the direction of and in collaboration with the Registered Nurse. Collaborates with other members of the health team, delegates appropriately to support staff and directs care to assure the patient’s care needs are met. Expected to exercise good judgment in the care of patients and is accountable for the patient care delivered. Will stay current with standards of the Nurse Practice Act. The actions and attitudes of the LPN will promote and support the hospital’s mission and core values.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Collects health status data relevant to the patient’s presenting problem in a continuous, systematic, and complete manner.

2. Assists with the development of an individualized Plan of Care based on mutual, realistic, and measurable goals and documents this thoroughly in the patient’s record.

3. Demonstrates organizational abilities that prioritize patient care needs in the planning and implementation of nursing care.

4. Coordinates and directs available resources and personnel to implement the Plan of Care.

5. Performs treatments, including medication administration, as ordered by the physician and carries out nursing interventions in accordance with the Plan of Care.

6. Evaluates the patient’s response to treatments/interventions revises the Plan of Care as necessary.

7. Documents all aspects of patient care, medication administration, interventions, and changes to the Plan of Care according to approved policy.

8. Provides teaching for patients, families and significant others according to the Plan of Care and documents accordingly.

9. Communicates effectively with other members of the health care team to ensure continuity and coordination of care, appropriate care delivery and to report changes in patient’s condition.

10. Facilitates safe and timely patient throughput, including admission/transfer/discharge, diagnostics, and therapeutics.

11. Complies with hospital policies and practices in all aspects of care and professional behavior.

12. Maintains adherence to regulatory standards in all aspects of nursing practice.

13. Respects the rights, dignity, and confidentiality of all patients.

14. Attends and actively participates in unit staff meetings.

15. Utilizes chain of command to communicate issues and seek resolution.

16. Demonstrates support and compliance with UMMC Midtown Campus’ mission, vision, values, philosophy, goals objectives, and policies.

17. Performs additional functions to assist the Clinical Manager and other activities as assigned.

Work Experience

Education and Experience

1. Currently licensed in the State of Maryland.

2. Graduate from an approved nursing school.

3. American Heart Association BLS provider completion.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

1. Considerable walking, long periods of standing and frequently fluctuating activities.

2. Exposure to all types of illnesses, disturbed patients, and environmental hazards including contact with body fluids potentially infectious for blood borne pathogens. Possibility of injury from equipment and injury or strains from moving patients and/or irrational patients.
