Which technology companies in Michigan sponsor F-1 CPT visas?
Large Michigan employers with established internship and co-op programs, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, Stellantis, and Consumers Energy, regularly hire F-1 CPT students in technology roles. Mid-size software firms and startups in the Ann Arbor and Detroit metro areas also participate in CPT hiring, particularly those with ties to the University of Michigan and Michigan State University talent pipelines.
Which cities in Michigan have the most technology F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs?
Ann Arbor leads for pure technology and software roles, driven by the University of Michigan's proximity and a dense cluster of tech startups and research-oriented companies. Detroit and its suburbs, including Dearborn and Auburn Hills, offer substantial volume in automotive technology and engineering software. Grand Rapids is an emerging option, particularly in manufacturing technology and IT services.
What types of technology roles typically qualify for F-1 CPT sponsorship in Michigan?
Software engineering, data analysis, machine learning, embedded systems, IT infrastructure, and cybersecurity roles are among the most common technology positions offered under F-1 CPT in Michigan. Automotive-adjacent technology work, such as autonomous vehicle software, connected vehicle systems, and manufacturing automation, is particularly prominent in Michigan and often structured as formal co-op or internship programs tied directly to degree requirements.
How do I find technology F-1 CPT sponsorship jobs in Michigan?
Migrate Mate lists technology roles in Michigan from employers that have sponsored F-1 CPT students, letting you filter specifically by visa type and state. Because CPT requires employer cooperation and DSO authorization, focusing on companies with documented CPT hiring history, as surfaced on Migrate Mate, helps narrow the search to realistic opportunities rather than applying broadly and discovering visa incompatibility late in the process.
Are there any Michigan-specific considerations for F-1 CPT in the technology industry?
Michigan's technology sector is heavily influenced by the automotive and mobility industries, meaning many CPT positions are structured as multi-semester co-ops rather than single-term internships. Students should confirm with their DSO that multi-semester CPT authorization is feasible under their program timeline. Additionally, some Michigan employers, particularly Tier 1 automotive suppliers, require physical presence on-site, which affects students considering remote arrangements.
