Job Summary
To assist with research activities within the Department of Psychiatry related to Sleep and Circadian Rhythms in various clinical populations. With guidance from faculty and research personnel, the clinical research assistant will support coordination and administrative details of assigned projects, including but not limited to screening and collecting information from potential participants according to the research study protocols, conduct interviews in person and via phone calls and/or zoom, conduct epidemiological, social or behavioral assessments, and collect data and/or biological samples (e.g. saliva, blood, urine, feces) from research participants in studies. The CRC-assistant will also coordinate study visits and follow-up of study participants. The CRC-assistant may also assist in preparation of progress reports and other summary materials, perform literature searches and retrieving articles. The potential exists to assist in the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and presentations at conferences and workshops. The CRC-assistant will work collaboratively with other team members and also independently to fulfill the goals of the project.

Job Responsibilities
Participant Recruitment & Communication:
- Conduct telephone and email outreach to recruit study participants, including screening calls, scheduling, and follow-up.
- Conduct study visits with participants via Zoom, which may last several hours and include sleep data review, guidance through study procedures, side-effect monitoring, and outcome assessments.
- Administer sensitive mental health screenings, including assessments of suicidal thoughts and behavior.
- Communicate with participants across multiple U.S. time zones, which regularly requires after-hours and weekend availability.
Study Coordination & Data Management:
- Assist study coordinator in tracking participant progress through a 5-week study protocol.
- Precisely follow detailed study checklists during every visit - in order and without omission.
- Monitor active participants daily. Maintain detailed records, perform data entry and verification, review and interpret sleep/activity data, ship study supplies to participants via UPS, collect and process biological materials (e.g., saliva, blood, urine, feces), and other duties as assigned.
- Attend weekly team meetings and all assigned trainings.
Professionalism, Teamwork & Adaptability:
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to precisely follow multi-step protocols are critical for this position.
- Must be comfortable making phone calls, handling unexpected issues (e.g., equipment problems, participant schedule changes), and working with a clinical population that may present with pain-related irritability, cognitive difficulties, and comorbid mental health conditions.
- A team science approach is central to our lab - proactive collaboration and willingness to support team members are expected.
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills are required.
- Must be able to receive and incorporate frequent corrective feedback, particularly during training.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED is necessary.
- Vehicle required to ship study supplies to research participants via UPS.
Desired Qualifications
- Associates Degree or Bachelors Degree in Health Science or an equivalent combination of related education and experience is desirable. An understanding of medical terminology, experience in a large complex health care setting, ability to effectively communicate with staff and faculty of all levels, and knowledge of university policies and procedures is desirable.
- Experience using Microsoft 365
- A strong ability to problem-solve individually and with project team

Modes of Work

Supervision Received
This position receives direct supervision and reports directly to Dr. Helen Burgess, Co-Director, Sleep and Circadian Research Lab, Professor in Department of Psychiatry.
Background Screening
