Which government employers in Minnesota sponsor E-3 visas?
Federal agencies with significant Minnesota operations, including the Department of Veterans Affairs (through the Minneapolis VA Health Care System), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the Centers for Disease Control regional offices, have histories of sponsoring work visas for specialty occupation roles. The University of Minnesota, as a public research institution, also sponsors E-3 visas for qualifying academic and research positions. Sponsorship availability varies by role, department budget, and hiring cycle.
Which cities in Minnesota have the most government E-3 sponsorship jobs?
Minneapolis and Saint Paul account for the majority of government E-3 opportunities in Minnesota. As the state capital, Saint Paul hosts numerous Minnesota state agency headquarters, while Minneapolis is home to federal offices, VA facilities, and the University of Minnesota's main campus. Rochester has some government-adjacent opportunities linked to public health and research, particularly given its connection to Mayo Clinic's public health partnerships.
What types of government roles typically qualify for E-3 sponsorship in Minnesota?
E-3 visa eligibility requires the position to qualify as a specialty occupation, meaning it must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field. In Minnesota's government sector, roles in public health analysis, information technology, civil and environmental engineering, urban planning, policy research, and biostatistics commonly meet this standard. General administrative or clerical roles typically do not qualify, as they don't require a degree in a specific discipline.
How do I find government E-3 sponsorship jobs in Minnesota?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search for government E-3 sponsorship jobs in Minnesota, as the platform filters specifically for roles where employers have indicated visa sponsorship availability. When browsing on Migrate Mate, filter by state (Minnesota), visa type (E-3), and the Government and Public Sector industry tag to surface relevant listings. Given that public sector hiring moves on formal announcement cycles, checking regularly is worthwhile.
Are there any Minnesota-specific considerations for E-3 sponsorship in the government sector?
Minnesota public sector employers, particularly state agencies, are subject to civil service hiring rules that can slow the sponsorship process compared to private employers. Federal positions sometimes have citizenship requirements that exclude E-3 applicants entirely, particularly roles involving security clearances. Australian nationals applying through the E-3 category should confirm early in the process whether a specific federal or state position permits non-citizen applicants before investing time in an application.
What is the prevailing wage for E-3 government jobs in Minnesota?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
