We are Olsson. We engineer and design solutions that improve the world around us. As a company, we promise to always be responsive, transparent, and focused on results – for our people, our clients, and our company.

This approach builds a culture that is uniquely Olsson. It allows us to grow our people as we grow our business. This, in turn, creates a lasting impact on the world around us.
Job Description
Olsson is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Project Structural Engineer to join our Federal Engineering and Design Team, where your expertise will directly support the development of mission-critical infrastructure across the country. From military installations and VA hospitals to federal campuses and secure facilities, you'll help shape the structural backbone of projects that serve national interests and improve lives.
This is more than a design role — it's an opportunity to lead, collaborate, and innovate within a team that values technical excellence, client service, and community impact.
Key Responsibilities
As a Project Structural Engineer, you'll take ownership of structural design and coordination across a range of federal projects. Your day-to-day will include:
- Lead structural engineering efforts for vertical infrastructure projects including barracks, hospitals, administrative buildings, and specialized federal facilities.
- Perform detailed structural analysis and design of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood systems. Develop construction documents including plans, specifications, and calculations.
- Work closely with architects, civil engineers, mechanical/electrical teams, and federal stakeholders to ensure seamless integration of structural systems.
- Apply design standards including UFC (Unified Facilities Criteria), IBC (International Building Code), ASCE, AISC, and other federal and industry codes.
- Support proposal writing, scope development, and participate in federal RFP responses to help grow Olsson's federal portfolio.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, review work for quality and accuracy, and foster a collaborative learning environment.
Preferred Qualifications
We're looking for candidates who bring both technical expertise and leadership potential:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil or Architectural Engineering with a structural emphasis.
- PE or SE license (required).
- 6+ years of experience in structural design, ideally with federal clients or projects.
- Proficiency in Autodesk, Revit, and similar analysis tools.
- Familiarity with DoD, VA, and federal design standards and processes.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to lead meetings, coordinate teams, and engage with clients.
- Experience managing project schedules, budgets, and deliverables is a plus.
Why Olsson?
- Contribute to projects that serve national interests and make a difference in communities.
- Choose from remote, hybrid, or in-office arrangements that support your lifestyle and productivity.
- Join a team that values mentorship, innovation, and shared success. We celebrate wins together and learn from challenges.
- Advance your career through leadership roles, technical training, and exposure to high-profile federal clients.

Which companies sponsor visas for structural engineers in Nebraska?
HDR, headquartered in Omaha, is one of the most prominent structural engineering employers in Nebraska with a long history of international hiring. Other firms with a presence in the state include Olsson, Burns and McDonnell, and smaller civil and structural consultancies in Omaha and Lincoln. Larger firms generally have dedicated immigration support staff, making them more likely to navigate the sponsorship process for qualified candidates.
Which visa types are most common for structural engineer roles in Nebraska?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for structural engineers in Nebraska, as the role typically qualifies as a specialty occupation requiring at least a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering. Candidates with Canadian or Mexican citizenship may qualify for the TN visa, which covers engineers and involves a faster process. Australian citizens can explore the E-3 visa as an alternative to the H-1B lottery.
Which cities in Nebraska have the most structural engineer sponsorship jobs?
Omaha accounts for the majority of structural engineering sponsorship activity in Nebraska, driven by HDR's global headquarters and a concentration of infrastructure and commercial development projects. Lincoln, as the state capital, also generates consistent demand through government-contracted engineering work and proximity to the University of Nebraska's engineering programs. Smaller markets like Grand Island see occasional openings tied to regional infrastructure projects.
How to find structural engineer visa sponsorship jobs in Nebraska?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically by visa sponsorship availability, making it straightforward to find structural engineer roles in Nebraska without sorting through positions that won't support international candidates. You can search by role and state to surface openings from firms like HDR and Olsson that have active sponsorship programs. Focusing on companies with established immigration infrastructure in Nebraska significantly improves the likelihood of a successful application.
Are there state-specific factors structural engineers should know when pursuing sponsorship in Nebraska?
Nebraska employers must pay H-1B workers the prevailing wage as determined by the Department of Labor for the Omaha or Lincoln metropolitan area, which reflects local market rates. The University of Nebraska produces a steady pipeline of engineering graduates, so international candidates benefit from differentiating through specialized experience in structural analysis software, bridge design, or transportation infrastructure. Nebraska's engineering licensure requirements from the Nebraska State Board of Engineers also apply regardless of visa status.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored structural engineer jobs in Nebraska?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
