Which visa types are most common for mental health counseling roles in Utah?
The H-1B visa is the most common visa for mental health counselors in Utah, as licensed counseling roles typically qualify as specialty occupations requiring at least a master's degree in counseling or a related field. Some employers, particularly nonprofit community health centers, have also used the H-1B cap-exempt route if affiliated with a qualifying institution. International candidates with a J-1 visa exchange visitor background may also transition through waiver programs tied to underserved area service requirements.
Which companies sponsor visas for mental health counselors in Utah?
Larger health systems with established HR and legal infrastructure are the most consistent sponsors in Utah. Intermountain Health, University of Utah Health, and Salt Lake Behavioral Health have sponsored international workers in clinical and counseling roles. Federally Qualified Health Centers operating in rural Utah counties also sponsor H-1B and J-1 waiver candidates, particularly for positions in medically underserved communities where filling licensed counselor vacancies is a documented challenge.
Which cities in Utah have the most mental health counseling sponsorship jobs?
Salt Lake City accounts for the largest share of mental health counseling sponsorship activity in Utah, given its concentration of hospital systems, university-affiliated clinics, and behavioral health organizations. Provo and Orem, home to Brigham Young University and Utah Valley Hospital, also generate consistent demand. Ogden and St. George have smaller but growing markets, with rural areas sometimes offering additional incentives tied to J-1 waiver Conrad 30 slots for underserved communities.
How to find mental health counseling visa sponsorship jobs in Utah?
Migrate Mate is a job board specifically built for international candidates seeking visa sponsorship in the United States, including mental health counseling roles in Utah. You can filter by state and job category to surface positions where employers have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. Focusing your search on larger health systems, FQHCs, and university-affiliated practices in Utah gives you the strongest starting point for sponsorship-eligible openings.
What state-specific requirements should international mental health counselors know about Utah?
Utah requires licensed professional counselors to hold a master's or doctoral degree in counseling or a closely related field and pass the National Counselor Examination. International applicants must have their credentials evaluated for equivalency before the Utah Division of Professional Licensing will consider an application. Degree evaluation from a NACES-approved service is typically required. Completing supervised clinical hours while on a work visa requires careful coordination with your employer to ensure the hours meet Utah's licensure standards.
What is the prevailing wage for sponsored mental health counseling jobs in Utah?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
