We’re looking for an Assistant Container Grower – Irrigation at our farms in Jackson, WI. This is a year-round position responsible for day-to-day irrigation management and system reliability across the container range, including scheduling, monitoring, troubleshooting, and maintenance. Supports container-tree production and plant health by ensuring consistent, efficient water delivery.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Manage daily irrigation schedules and adjust them within established guidelines based on weather, plant demand, and substrate moisture.
- Inspect irrigation zones and verify proper operation, uniform water delivery, and adequate container moisture.
- Troubleshoot common irrigation issues involving controllers, valves, pumps, pressure, flow, leaks, and clogged or damaged components; complete repairs or coordinate service as needed.
- Perform preventive maintenance and coordinate spring startup, system testing, fall shutdown, and winterization.
- Maintain accurate irrigation schedules, inspection logs, repairs, and records of recurring issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve irrigation efficiency, reliability, and automation; communicate significant issues and recommendations to the Head Container Grower.
- Monitor plant health, substrate moisture, pH, and EC; report signs of water stress, nutrient deficiencies, pests, or disease.
- Assist with fertilizer application and calibration of injection equipment as needed.
- Support general container-production tasks and help direct employees when assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Degree in Horticulture or a similar degree, or equivalent industry experience (3-5 years in plant production).
- Knowledge of woody and herbaceous landscape plants in southeastern Wisconsin.
- Knowledge of plant culture to produce northern hardy nursery plants.
- Knowledge of Rain Bird irrigation controls, including LX-IVM Pro and IQ4 where applicable, is a plus but not required.
- Experience operating farm equipment, machines, and tools.
- Physical and mental toughness required. We all work hard.
- Good management skills to maintain an efficient work environment.
- An insurable driver’s license is a must (through our provider).
- Reliable transportation and willingness to travel between our properties.
- Bi-lingual a plus.
- Ability to continuously move and lift 50 or more pounds.
- Attention to detail in verbal and written communication.
- Positive, outgoing attitude with an internal drive to succeed.
- No remote work.
BENEFITS & COMPENSATION
$18.00-$22.00 per hour.
