How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Graduate
Leverage the master's cap for better H-1B lottery odds
A master's degree or higher from a U.S. institution gives you two chances in the H-1B lottery - first in the 20,000-visa advanced degree pool, then in the 65,000-visa regular pool. This dual selection opportunity can significantly improve your chances of being selected, particularly in years with high registration numbers.
Choose a STEM-designated graduate program for maximum work authorization
STEM-designated master's programs provide up to 36 months of post-graduation work authorization through OPT and STEM OPT. This extended runway gives you time to secure employment, demonstrate your value, and attempt the H-1B lottery multiple times. Check your program's CIP code with the university to confirm STEM designation before enrolling.
Use your program's alumni and employer network for job placement
Graduate programs often have stronger employer relationships and more targeted career services than undergraduate programs. MBA career centers, engineering department industry advisory boards, and alumni networks at schools like MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon, and Georgia Tech maintain direct pipelines to employers who regularly sponsor.
Pursue research or teaching assistantships at cap-exempt institutions
If you take a research or teaching role at your university or an affiliated research institution after graduation, these positions may be H-1B cap-exempt. This means no lottery is required, and the petition can be filed at any time. Cap-exempt roles can serve as a bridge while you pursue cap-subject positions in the private sector.
Tailor your job search to roles that require graduate-level expertise
Target positions where a master's or PhD is the minimum qualification rather than just preferred. Roles in machine learning research, quantitative finance, biostatistics, and advanced engineering design are more likely to require graduate degrees, making the sponsorship justification stronger and reducing competition from bachelor's-level candidates.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does having a graduate degree improve my chances of visa sponsorship?
Yes, in two important ways. First, a U.S. master's degree or higher qualifies you for the H-1B advanced degree exemption (commonly called the master's cap), which provides an additional lottery selection opportunity before the regular cap. Second, graduate degrees strengthen the specialty occupation argument because employers can more easily demonstrate that the role requires advanced knowledge and specialized training.
What graduate degrees have the highest visa sponsorship rates?
Computer science, data science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and MBA programs lead in sponsorship rates. STEM graduate degrees also qualify for the 24-month STEM OPT extension, providing up to 36 months of work authorization. Specialized master's programs in fields like financial engineering, biostatistics, and operations research also have strong placement rates with sponsoring employers.
How does the master's cap H-1B lottery work?
If you hold a master's degree or higher from a U.S. institution, your registration first goes through the advanced degree exemption lottery (master's cap) of 20,000 visas. If not selected there, your registration automatically enters the regular cap lottery of 65,000 visas, giving you two chances at selection. This effectively increases your probability of selection compared to candidates with only a bachelor's degree.
Should I get a graduate degree specifically to improve my visa prospects?
A graduate degree can improve your visa chances through the master's cap and stronger specialty occupation arguments, but it should also align with your career goals. The investment of time and money is significant, and the master's cap advantage only applies to degrees from U.S. institutions. If you are already working on OPT and your employer is willing to sponsor, an additional degree may not be necessary unless it genuinely advances your career.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Graduate jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a graduate in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
