Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding Medical Oncologist Jobs
Target Academic Medical Centers
University hospitals and NCI-designated cancer centers have extensive experience sponsoring international physicians and often have dedicated immigration support teams for medical faculty positions.
Highlight Board Certification Status
ABIM board certification or eligibility demonstrates specialty expertise. Include certification timeline in applications, as some employers prefer candidates already certified or board-eligible.
Emphasize Research Experience
Academic medical centers value research backgrounds. Highlight publications, clinical trials involvement, and specialized training in areas like immunotherapy, precision medicine, or hematologic malignancies.
Consider Regional Medical Centers
Large regional hospitals and integrated health systems outside major metros often have strong oncology programs and may face less competition for sponsored positions.
Prepare for Extended Credentialing
Medical licensing and hospital credentialing processes can take 3-6 months. Factor this timeline into visa applications and start dates with potential employers.

Find Medical Oncologist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do medical oncologists qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, medical oncologists qualify as specialty occupations requiring advanced medical knowledge. You need a medical degree, completed residency in internal medicine and oncology fellowship, and ideally board certification or eligibility through ABIM. Most major hospital systems and cancer centers regularly sponsor international physicians.
What if I completed residency on J-1 status?
You likely need a J-1 waiver before becoming H-1B eligible. The two-year home residency requirement applies to most J-1 medical residents. Waiver processing takes 6-12 months, so start applications early. Some employers will begin the sponsorship process contingent on waiver approval.
Can foreign medical school graduates get sponsored?
Yes, but you must complete USMLE Steps 1, 2, and 3, plus U.S. residency and fellowship training. ECFMG certification is required for residency applications. Most employers focus on your U.S. training completion rather than medical school location.
Which employers sponsor medical oncologists most frequently?
Academic medical centers, NCI-designated cancer centers, large hospital systems, and integrated health networks like Kaiser Permanente sponsor regularly. Private practice groups occasionally sponsor, but academic and large institutional employers have more experience with immigration processes.
How does subspecialty training affect sponsorship chances?
Subspecialty fellowships in areas like hematologic malignancies, thoracic oncology, or gynecologic oncology can strengthen applications, especially at academic centers. Research experience in immunotherapy or precision medicine is particularly valued. However, general medical oncology training is sufficient for most positions.
How to find Medical Oncologist jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Medical Oncologist positions with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting international medical professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on major hospital systems, cancer treatment centers, academic medical institutions, and large healthcare networks that commonly sponsor H-1B, O-1, and EB-2 visas for specialized oncology roles. These organizations frequently seek qualified international oncologists to fill critical positions.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Medical Oncologist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
