How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Oil And Gas
Target upstream and midstream operators first
Large upstream producers and pipeline companies file the most LCAs for technical roles. They have established immigration teams and are more likely to sponsor than smaller oilfield service contractors who rely on local hires.
Match your degree field to the job description
H-1B specialty occupation requires a direct link between your degree and the role. A petroleum engineering or geosciences degree should align explicitly with the job title listed on the LCA to avoid a Request for Evidence.
Canadian and Mexican engineers consider the TN visa
Engineers from Canada or Mexico can use TN status, which requires no lottery and no employer petition filing with USCIS. The process is faster and less expensive, making it a strong alternative for qualifying technical roles.
Highlight field experience alongside your credentials
Employers sponsoring visas for drilling, reservoir, or completions roles want candidates who reduce onboarding time. Quantified field experience on your resume strengthens both your application and the employer's specialty occupation justification.
Understand that LCA prevailing wage level affects your offer
Employers must pay at least the DOL prevailing wage for your role and location. Knowing the wage level tied to your job title helps you assess whether an offer meets sponsorship requirements before signing anything.
Ask about cap-exempt sponsorship paths
Some oil and gas roles at research-affiliated institutions or nonprofits may qualify for cap-exempt H-1B filings, bypassing the lottery entirely. It is worth asking during the offer stage whether the employer has any cap-exempt entity options.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Which visa types are most common for oil and gas workers in the U.S.?
H-1B is the most common visa for petroleum engineers, reservoir engineers, and geoscientists. Canadian and Mexican nationals in qualifying engineering roles frequently use TN status instead, since it skips the lottery. O-1 is an option for highly accomplished specialists, but it requires extensive documentation of extraordinary ability in the field.
Does an oil and gas role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Petroleum engineering, chemical engineering, geosciences, and reservoir engineering roles almost always qualify as specialty occupations because they require a specific bachelor's degree or higher as a standard industry requirement. Roles like general field technician or operations supervisor can face more scrutiny if the job description does not clearly require a degree in a specific technical discipline.
How can I find oil and gas employers who actively sponsor visas?
Migrate Mate lists oil and gas roles from employers with verified sponsorship history, so you can filter directly for positions where visa support is confirmed rather than guessing from generic job postings. DOL LCA disclosure data also shows which companies have filed for H-1B or H-1B1 workers in oil and gas job titles, which is a reliable proxy for sponsorship willingness.
Do I need a U.S. engineering license to work in oil and gas on a sponsored visa?
Most oil and gas roles do not require a U.S. Professional Engineer license to obtain visa sponsorship, though a PE license strengthens your profile for senior or consulting roles. Your employer's legal team will focus on your degree field and job duties to build the specialty occupation case, not licensure, unless the role explicitly requires it.
Are H-1B approval rates for oil and gas roles affected by the industry's hiring cycles?
USCIS adjudicates petitions based on the job description and qualifications, not industry conditions, so approval rates for well-documented petroleum and chemical engineering roles remain strong regardless of commodity price cycles. However, oil and gas employers do reduce sponsorship volume during downturns, which means fewer available petitions even when approval rates hold steady.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Oil And Gas jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
